Why not just regular PVC?

I think regular PVC would be something of a compromise and would make the plumbing look like a nuclear power plant. For one, the overflow box is external, so to get it into the sump in the stand with regular PVC we'd have to do two 90 degree turns to get into the stand: down from the overflow, sideways into the stand, down again into the sump to avoid splashing. Flexible PVC wouldn't need any since you can just bend it a bit right into the stand.

The nature of a closed loop is exactly that - it's closed, so there are no risks of leaking. The drain and returns are both plumbed into the pump, so the water only goes through the pump and not into the sump.

Ok so Im not THAT ignorant! But what if there is a failiure in a seal somewhere along the line ? Is that just a really really remote possibility that its not worth worrying about?

So, this is the configuration for the closed loop Mike and I came up with. There's going to be an old stereo rack next to the tank (to put various things on) and we're putting the external pump on the top shelf. Once this was done we thought perhaps putting it on the floor - as we originally thought - would have been better after all...but it's a bit late for that. So what do you guys think?

LOoks good but I have another question. If you want to clean the pump, how are you going to do it? I see valves on both of the return lines but not valve on the intake line. If you remove the pump for cleaning how are you going to stop water from coming down the intake line?

Yes, we know. Not sure how I missed the middle one but it's all setup.

It says to wait 2 hours for the PVC glue to dry, is that right? And how long should we wait until we fill it and give it a run?

Yes FW test and I want to see how the return pump and over flow work.


Also how long do you think you should let the tank run before you're sure everything is good before starting with the salt water setup?

So, the tank is running with fresh water. But my external overflow box fills up with water and overflows. The sump is functioning correctly, so is my durso too high? Do I just cut a bit of it to place it lower? We took it out altogether and everything runs ok with water draining - but it's too noisy this way. Is cutting the durso a bit the solution? (I'm running a Mag 7 for the return.)

Here's a couple of pix. The first is the sump. The flex pvcs for return and drain have to cross. Because of how the sump and the external overflow are. The only way to fix that would be to flip the sump so the refugium is to the back. But to us it made more sense to have the fuge in the front. So we get some crossing in the back.

THe other pic is the overflow without the durso. You can see the water level is low, but the darn thing is noisy. If I put in the durso the water builds up and flows over.

Dmitry, I'm glad you caught (actually Kris) the missing ball valve and union on the closed loop overflow. That could have made for a mess sometime down the road.

The durso must be cut to the level that will accommodate your pump and flow. When I wet tested it, it was high, but never once overflowed. Remember, I tested it with a Mag 18 (was all I had available) so I dialed it down considerably. Also, you can adjust the flow going into the tank with a ball valve on the return pump......but definitely cut the Durso, small increments at a time. If you cut too much at once, you might wind up having to increase the height, which would be tough without a new length of 1" pipe.

I actually have a length of 1'' PVC if I need it. I've started cutting in pieces. What's the normal level of water in the overflow box? How many inches from the top?

Also, the return pipe is under the surface of the water in the sump and it's creating really violent turbulence. It's like there's a submarine ready to surface! I don't remember it having this kind of force in my old tank. Any idea why and if it can be fixed?

I think I got the overflow box under control. But the water going into the sump is creating havoc in there (with and without a durso.) The water comes out with such force it's actually splashing out of the sump! How do I calm it down??
