So it's just about time I start doing something with my 500 gallon tank. I've got a couple of options here some better ideas than others.

I picked up a 500 gallon tank that I got an awesome deal on, and now I need to figure out what to do with it. I was thinking my basement but seeing how it took like 9 guys to move into a truck without even trying to lift it just sliding it off it's stand and into a UHAUL. It's sitting in my garage right now, I'd have to take it out of the garage going through a door that leads to my backyard, open up the bilco doors make some kind of ramp and slide it down where will probably make it, it's final resting place.

Option two probably isn't a good idea where I would leave it in my garage, cut out a section in my breezeway so you can veiw it from there. I've got two problems with that though. One neither the garage or the breezeway is heated and I think is probably very poorly insulated. That would be the easist spot to put it though because then I would be moving it from one side of the garage to the other. The other problem which of course could be that the exhaust from the cars could cause problems to the fish health, Keeping my cars in the garage during winter is a must.

All my other ideas have been shot down sooooo what does everyone think basement or breezeway?

I would box out the tank in the garage. Make it like a seperate room if You have the space and insulate it good and even put a exhaust fan to be sure of fumes. I did this in my last house and had zero problems. And it was very easy to work out of I thought. Still a chiller is a must and very good heaters.

Unless you live in your garage or your breezeway I say try and figure out a way to get it into the basement. You will enjoy it alot more than having to sit in your breezeway/garage to take in the benefit of having a tank that size. Good luck...

I had to move a 220, not even close in the weight your dealing with but I think it my experience in moving it could prove helpfull.

1. Get your self some professional grade suction cups that will give you a firm place to grab hold of the tank.

2. I made great use of furniture dollys. Get the tank up onto them and you can role it around. I used two for my tank, but would go with at least 3 maybe 4 in your case.

3. I had to take the tank down a very steep staircase without any room for someone to hold it from the sides. Cali Reef built a slide out of 2x4s with carpet ontop of them. We where able to slide it down the staircase, no heavy lifting needed.

The goal was to lift it as little as possible. So if I could role it or slide it, that is what I did. The tightest part was going up a single step and through a doorway. I rolled it over to the door and then picked up and passed it through the door onto another dolly.

My tank thread, has some pics of the move wich may help you think about it.
