It's definitely noise from the sump. The water splashing. The filter sock is about 2-3 inches into the waterline. When I pull the sock upwards, the noise stops.

Also, the elbow has a hole in it already with rubber tube that goes upwards acting like the durso already. I was planning on running a 2x durso near the sump as well, but trashed the idea.

take a 1/4 in tap at the top of your drain elbo and put in a threaded quick lock ballvalve(like you see on ro/di systems) and run a 1/4 in hose out of it higherthan the water line and you can adjust the amt of air flow into your drain and eliminate most of the noise w/o killing your drainage flow

I'm not getting what you're saying. I do have a 1/4 inch hose running out of my elbow that is higher than the water line. The noise isn't from the overflow box, the overflow box is actually dead silent. It's just the splashing of the water in the sump. The water line in the sump is higher than the bottom of hte filter sock. Or maybe i'm not getting it?

There's probably a waterline in the filter sock so you're hearing water splash. Can you raise the filter sock an inch or two? Also, your sump water line seems a bit high. Just a guess, it looks like 8" high. If possible, I would lower it to about 6, maybe 7" instead.

How can i control the height of the water line? The baffles pretty much regulate it's height. And when I remove water the only compartment that's height is affected is the return compartment

Maybe i should have made the drain outlet go into the water line and away with the filter sock?

I wasn't sure if there was any way as I can't see the sump design. Looks acrylic so in theory you can just cut the baffles but I'm sure you probably want to keep it looking clean. The sump height is usually lower for better skimmer performance though. You can raise the skimmer by putting it up on something instead.

If raising the sock an inch or two (as long as the rim is below your rim height so it doesn't overflow onto your floor) doesn't work or limited by space, an alternative is, you can get a PVC coupling to connect the drain to some more 1.5" PVC and make it a few inches lower. I'm not a fan of using filter socks because of the maintenance of always changing them out and cleaning them, but they do help in filtering out particles, but I never seem to have that issue *knock on wood*. The choices are yours.

I'll find a way to add a coupling + a few more inches into the water line. I imagine if fish went down the drain it would suck for them as well.

Adding a coupling would be hard now... I'm thinking of maybe redoing the entire thing, and coupling high up near the elbow.

Edit: Any success if I just add an elbow to the drain in the sump side therefore reducing turbulence?

fish wont go down teh drain cause you have the over flow box in the tank

Alright, going to take the opportunity in adding a 1.5'' pvc union when I hack the pvc off, and then extend it 2-3 inches below the water line.

That should do the trick!

All this work on the new tank is making me neglect my other tank - it's been due for a water change since saturday!

I did it myself, local glass cutter. Sorry for late response. I ended up removing it because everyone who derims it doesn't even eurobrace it. It's not worth it.

Anyway...

Happy New Year. Tank stocking is very slow as I had a period of handling a minor aptasia problem, and a nuissance flatworm problem. Weathered the storm and letting the tank mature until I can finally start adding some SPS.

Added some caps from a fellow reefer to test. So far so good. Some growth pics as well.

Too lazy to do a side by side comparison but it's pretty self explanatory if you go back and forth between this page .
