Paint or stain?

This is a peek at the stand and canopy I am doing for my 65 that I will be doing a full build thread on very soon. My wife wants it painted white to match the basement I just got done refinishing. The carpet goes down Wenesday and will be a coffee brown. I want Black or a medium stain color. You guys may be the deciding factor so what should it be? Black, White or Stained?

I'm finishing the doors today hopefully. I cannot rotate the image for some reason.. Will work on that.

I think you should stain it a dark mahogany color. You will get a lot more shine outta the stain than you will with paint. Thats beautiful woodwork. Good luck with it

Mahogany or Dark Cherry. No paint. Nice work. - In my opinion i think paint is a last resort. but the wood you have is in GREAT shape.

Beautiful setup Ken. LOVE rimless. That Espresso looks dark, almost black. Can you still see grain in the panels?

Finished up the trim on the canopy. Just need to finish the doors. How's this? Better

Depends on whether the tank is a lone centerpiece in the room or if it has to go with other furniture. If all the other furniture in the room is white, painting it would probably be best, although unfortunate.

Other circumstances notwithstanding, I vote stained. Great job on the woodwork - looks great.

Nope it's the only piece on "My Side" of the newly finished basement. She thought it should match the built in book cases I made and all the trim work. Just showed her 2 choices of stain. She said she was glad I fought for it instead of paint Now English Walnut or Antique Gunstock..Hmmmm

Painting nice wood is like drinking an imperial stout at 32 degrees. It's not terrible, but you lose a lot of flavor.

Always go with stain (and appropriate serving temperatures).

Sample board colors

I make sample boards whenever I build something to try out finishes. Gives me a good idea what to expect.
On the left is "Gunstock" and the right is "English Walnut" with a quick topcoat. What say ye? Excuse cruddy cell phone pic.
