Hi,

I am in the process of converting my freshwater tank to a reef tank. I would like to stick to a Mag submersible so I don't have to drill my sump. My question is with the standard All Glass 125 reef ready tank, should I use a Mag 18, 24 or 36? Thanks.

i have a aga 120rr 4'x2'x2' and i use a mag 18 and is perfect. IMO the mag 24 or 36 would be too much flow. aga says that each megaflow is design to flow 600gph so that would be 1200gph with two overflows so with lost of flow due to tubing, elbows,ect.... mag 18 is fine. besides if you look at the specs on the 18 and 24 the 18 uses only half the electricity.

I had heat issues too with the Mag pumps, 9.5 and a 12. I ran them both for a time in a sump and boy was my temp on the high end all of the time. I realized they were a problem when my chiller started going off at all different times of the day.

I don't want to start drilling my sump to fit a bulkhead. Otherwise I would go external. While on that topic does anybody know where I can get a 10-15 gallon glass drilled in the metro area ? (I want to use it as a fuge).
Thanks.

external, hmm

I am now rethinking the pump/heat issue  . Is drilling an acrylic sump easy? Does anybody have a link to some directions. What size and type drill bit would I use to install a 1" bulkhead drain? Also what external pump would work best with my setup (i.e. standard aga 125)? Thanks again.

You would not need to drill a sump to use an external pump. All you need to do is plumb in such a way that you can siphon the water from your sump all the way up to the pump. That is how i have my iwaki pump hooked up from my sump as a return. I also have a 125 gallon and I have my Iwaki 40 tuned down....
