Niles is right. Obviously, for us to have a reef hobby, we have to take from the oceans. We can "say" that we are helping, but at the same time we are taking from the ocean as well. We take more than we give back. It's a lot of talk "oh we are helping save the reef." but no action so in my opinion we aren't really helping. Are you personally going out there replanting the ocean? We might be slowing the process of taking out from the reef by fragging, but we still take from the reef.
I started my reef hobby because I liked the way it looked. Straight up plain and simple. I did not think about the ocean at all when I started buying corals. But isn't that what this hobby is about? - your personal piece of the ocean? We combine corals and fish from all over the world into a glass box to try and create the perfect reef.
However,With corals, its easier to say since we can frag and just continue that forever. but some corals, especially the rarer ones, are taken from the ocean.
Fish for example. most of those fish we cannot breed. they are taken from the ocean. think about how much fish are imported constantly. I've always wondered how the reefs manage to keep up with all the fish taken out from them all the time. If im not wrong, only cardinals and clowns are fish being bred.
