A bit hypocritical perhaps? the reefs are raped every day woldwide so that we can stock our tanks. The sad truth is that our hobby does close to zero to help the reefs and they would be better off if we did not exist. Tough to accept.

I disagree with that . If you take all the reefers all around the world and take 1 frag from each person that would be enuff to get things started back up . The way i look at it is when there is death there is also new life... So being that that reef died theres a new one being born . Thats the life cycle and thats the way it will always be.

Yes, but thats purely hypothetical and will never happen. It also doesn't account for the fish (which albeit can reproduce) and all the live rock (which doesn't and will never be returned to the ocean when we are done with it.)

This is very sad. I can't believe they even question if this was caused by the BP spill. Looking for a glimmer of brightness, this will allow for funding to scientists to study the reefs in the area and there might be much to learn. Also, don't underestimate the incredible power of mother nature to regenerate. It will take a long time, but the reef will recover much like a forest after a devestating fire. Let's just hope we don't forget our responsibility to the environment as time passes.

Wow talk about comin out stock, lock and barrel. So if you feel that way why is it exactly that you have a reef tank? And belong to a reefing site? I havent in my year in the hobby bought 1 piece of coral that was anything but aquacultured as well with other then my mated pair of clowns all of my fish were tank bred, not wild caught.

You should know from being a member for a while here that everyones tanks on here are probably almost all actually pieces of other reefers on heres tanks. This frag came from so and so- this one came from him- this one came from her and so on.

I probably in time will have dozens of reefers tanks come in small part to mine. Each swap you see the amazing amount of sales between members and those frags dont just disappear, they get fragged and split to others tanks as well- along with the DBTC frags that have rules governing those DEFINATELY go to other members as well. Thats the whole deal behind having frags with lineage- say my nem- it came from someones tank to house of laughter-masterswimmer- it split in masterswimmers tank- 1 came to me- mine has since split and one will most likely wind up in someone esles tank and the cycle will continue. Years from now my nem probably will have covered a dozen tanks possibly.

Niles is right. Obviously, for us to have a reef hobby, we have to take from the oceans. We can "say" that we are helping, but at the same time we are taking from the ocean as well. We take more than we give back. It's a lot of talk "oh we are helping save the reef." but no action so in my opinion we aren't really helping. Are you personally going out there replanting the ocean? We might be slowing the process of taking out from the reef by fragging, but we still take from the reef.

I started my reef hobby because I liked the way it looked. Straight up plain and simple. I did not think about the ocean at all when I started buying corals. But isn't that what this hobby is about? - your personal piece of the ocean? We combine corals and fish from all over the world into a glass box to try and create the perfect reef.

However,With corals, its easier to say since we can frag and just continue that forever. but some corals, especially the rarer ones, are taken from the ocean.

Fish for example. most of those fish we cannot breed. they are taken from the ocean. think about how much fish are imported constantly. I've always wondered how the reefs manage to keep up with all the fish taken out from them all the time. If im not wrong, only cardinals and clowns are fish being bred.

My tank is a 350g FOWLER. I accept the fact that the reefs had to give up some for this to happen. I just find it funny how much we can complain about the well-being of the reefs when we all stole a little for our own personal enjoyment. Just wanted to make that point, not offend anyone or start any fights.
