Looking to get an algae scrubber foe a mixed reef tank. I have a 125 gallon tank (about 160 with the sump). Ive been looking through the Youtubes and would like to know what ppl have had success with. Ive seen about 4 different models (ill start by price):
Aquatic Guys (about $200-$250)
IceCap (about ($300)
CW Algae (mid level about $325-$375)
Rain 2 (about $350)

Im concerned with space and light. The CW also has a kit for about $60 to block out the light. The Rain 2 looks like it can't fit over my sump. I see a blacked out version for the Icecap. It looks like the Clear water is sold out everywhere too......

Spend just a little but it more and get a Turbo’s Aquatics ATS. I’ve owned the Rain 2 which is the most expensive on your list, and my Turbo’s Aquatics scrubber makes the Rain 2 look like a toy. It has dimmable LEDs allowing you to tune your growth rate based on the nutrients in your tank. It is constructed with black ABS planels which blocks all light spill. It has a fully removable growth chamber for ease of cleaning. It also incorporates light blockers on the slot pipe so algae growth won’t block the stream of water over the growth screen. I run the latest generation L2 on my 57 gallon tank. I actually have to cut back the hours as it’s running a bit too efficiently. I actually need my tank to run a little dirtier. I would think that my L2 would be more appropriate for a tank of your size. I have mine mounted on DIY PVC rails over my Trigger 26 sump.

With the endplate off...

I have a cw 50 on my Reefer 350. It’s noisy and I can’t get the bulkhead to stop leaking. Definitely keeps my nutrients down but I had to take it offline until I get the leak stopped. I purchased a Apis 300 for my home tank. Much better quality build. I haven’t ran it yet because my tank is still cycling but it’s definitely a beast. Much better thought out design. Biggest problem with scrubbers is they take up a lot of space and have to be mounted above your sump in case of leaks. I was looking into an arid reactor so u I t could be run externally. But I got a great deal on the apis.

Agreed. Great for what it does but if you already have macro in the long run it will outcompete and youll have dieoff or stunted growth. Just fyi. You could dial it down but you dont need both running same time.

I have two 125 gallon tanks and on one of them I am using a refugium with cheato.
On the other i am thinking about getting this as an affordable option.

My friend installed his magic scrubber 5 weeks ago on fishless 90 gallon.

Pretty decent results on a budget scrubber.
