Thanks for all the support everyone. This really sucks big time. I emptied the 30g which was just cycling and now have to do something with my frag tank. I was going to try to hide it but not sure it is worth it. Seems like every time I try to get a tank up and running something goes wrong.

I first got into this when my friend was moving to Cali and I got his tanks. I had done plenty of freshwater tanks before but knew nothing about reefing so it was a real learning curve. They my job moved up and I had to leave the tanks behind.

Then I built my crazy 40g breeder rack which I realized was too much for where I was. So I got a used AIO frag tank but knew I would want more so patiently waited for another member here to get a 30rr. I just adopted some corals and a lone fish for the frag tank and the 30 was almost done cycling and now this.

I love this hobby/obsession and animals in general. Since moving to NY I have had to leave my cats behind, I have to give my parrots away, my dog died a few days ago and now this. I don't want to give up but it just seems like maybe its just not to be.

Sorry about your story cmantis. But as evoIX just said, wait till you move...

When I moved from Europe to the US a while back I was heartbroken that I could not build a new tank right away, always waiting for stability in my life to start a new one, since I know that this is a long term, thing. In the end it meant a 5 year hiatus. I was like a kid when I read about the new gear (Vortech pumps did not exist in Europe in 2005!) and then finally getting my tank started.

Sometimes sadly you need to wait... remember that a tank is always a work of patience... that can involve having no tank at all for a while.

So sorry to hear about this. I wouldn't risk the job or apartment but I also wouldn't sweat it. You made a simple mistake by leaving something running anyone could have done it and has a million times. Tell your boss you are getting rid of the tanks because they are forcing you and that you're very sorry about what happened.

You didn't kill someone dude they need to chill the F out. They have pictures they are e-mailing sounds like they have too much time on their hands.

Is there anything in the work contract, terms of hire or lease that says you could not set up an aquarium? Accidents happen. This is a first offense. Seems like a lot of overkill to me. Was there water damage?

Knock down the tanks and when things die down set up a pico. It should be no more than 5 gallons.

Picos are a lot of fun. They require a little more maintenance because of the less water volume which makes them more unstable, but they can be just as rewarding as a larger system. You can make a mini reef with nano fish and all. I love them because they are challenging on a very small scale.

Maintenance on my 2.5 gallon pico is easy. I top off with a splash of water every night. One to two times a week I change 1 qt of water. Once a week I rinse the sponge with tap and then RO/DI water. All in all maybe 10-15 mins total.

First offense? I don't think he's worried about jail time!...
for most people, their job and home are more important than a reef tank (most people)...
As for his 'work contract' or lease terms... IMO, as a landlord and employer...if a tenant or employee wants to 'challenge' or 'quote' the law to me... they're DONE...might as well pack their bags!

Yea, well, as an employee in private industry you can fire whoever you want, this is true. No can do so easily in a City agency with unions involved.

Tenants have lots of rights especially when it comes to leases, what is and is not in a contract can work for or against each person in most situations, not just leases.

Accidents are accidents. They happen. Most reasonable people understand and can come to a fair agreement.

Offense = breech of law or "rule". So yes it is his first offense in this area...I think. Haven't been here long enough or know anything about him to say anything else. But on its face, it appears innocent and just an accident.

Know it all. :chef:

If these people want to control your life with a job and tell you how to live, why are you even there? Surely, you can get another job and the freedom of another place to live. If I looked at a place that denied me cats, and a tank - Id tell them to go :afro: themselves.

You can have a dog but not cats and a caged parrot? I love logic. Makes perfect sense!

So I broke the frag tank down this morning and disconnected the RODI. I put the coral and lone fish in a bucket pending inspection and see where I take it from there. It was very sad indeed :(

So I don't know what to do here. Where I live is associated with work so if I get in trouble again in the future could be very bad. I can't believe I got myself into this mess.

Hey, was just thinking, do not know the details of the connection between your residence and your employment. But I would imagine that terminating your employment for something happened outside of it would be illegal. Also, I don't believe that your landlord has the right to notify your job of an incident that took place in the privacy of your own home. If I were you I would research this matter further.

He could be put up in a residence as part of the work contract and have to obey the rules.

Either way, not worth losing your job and home over this.

Work pays for my housing and it is all part of the same organization. I got rid of all the rocks and coral today and the lone fish is coming to my 40b rack build setup tomorrow.
