not sure what you mean but sounds like your red dial is missing?
and if you cover the other hole on the silencer the skimmer wont be able to pull in air...thats no good
if water is coming out, u have to skimmer dialed too high. Use the red knob to adjust the water level inside the skimmer. Are you using the stock pump as well?
i have the red dial, I adjusted where the water is right on the line behind the red threaded ring. So far is not skimming nothing and has not pass this line but it does say it takes a 48 hours to 72 hours. I did fix the problem with the water flying out of the out right in the red dial
Usually where do you guys set the waterline in the skimmer? I am a little scare of overflowing though. What is the safest waterline?
yes i have the stock pump also I uncover the hole to let the air back in.
Should i upgrade the pump?
In the tank the waterline should be how many inches below the overflow box (the bubble production diffuser) ?
I have the same skimmer and its doing ok. I've done a few mods on mine but I'm not sure that its performing that much better. You should at least do the gate valve mod to control the water hieght better. The red dial is too sensitive and doesn't allow fine tuning. Check here for all the mods and user reviews:
I have had my skimmer running for a year now, and I too was frustrated when I first set it up. If the skimmer is brand new, and you did not rinse it and clean it before putting it in your tank, you will need to wait at least one week before noticing any skimmate. You can get a good skim with adjusting hte red dial, but you will need to be patient and allow the skimmer to break in. It is totally unnecessary to replace that pump with a different one.
