Ethics of reefkeeping are right alongside those of a public aquarium. They're there for the public to learn, good or bad.
Local reefers are a great source for coral frags, and occaisionally fish. (want a couple of Bangaiis?
I've been kinda pondering about the ethics of reef keeping after being told that most are endangered. I wonder what the percentage of captive bred or propagated animals are. Anyone know?
Don't know the exact numbers but they are unfortunately much lower than we would hope. You can get a lot of good captive grown corals and even live rock but fish are proving to be more difficult. All the more reason to go slow and make sure that everything is taken care of ahead of time.
