this is a difficult argument to make, the reason stores sell fish and coral is because we buy them. so by the above argument we are all responsible for killing the fish that die in stores.
the thread would have been better served if the comment about keeping a tang in a 40 gallon was better explained. No one should be keeping a 6" sailfin tang in a 40 gallon tank, however the same fish as a 2" juvenile would be fine as long as it is moved into an appropriate tank in the future.
the fact that two of our areas fish experts have posted in this thread says a lot. it shows they do care. I have seen both of them refuse to sell livestock to people that could not care for them properly, that is being responsible in my book. accusing them of killing fish is not
I have two doryrhamphus pussuliferus in my sps dominant tank.
My system is not recomended to keep them in. I adjusted some things to suit them.
I lowered the flow a bit and placed foam protectors over the vortechs to keep the pipefish from getting sucked in. I added sand and seagrass to the corners of the tank which the pipefish love. And I have been feeding way to much mysis to make sure the pipefish get enough to eat. they have adapted to the tank very well and know how to get the most food when it's feeding time. I think if your intelligent and want to make the effort, do the research and you can keep almost anything. Just ask yourself before you make a purchase do I know how to care for this animal?
