Hi all. Looking for someone that has some knowledge on Gold Stripe Maroons. I have one GS maroon that is about 2". I don't know if it's male or female. How would I tell? It has a rather large BTA that it lives in.

I'd like to add a second GS maroon to pair with the first one. Can I do it? How do I tell the sexes? Will they pair?

I'm not going out looking for another GS maroon until I'm sure it can be done and that I know what I'm looking for.

Thanks all,
Woody

Hello, from the get go I knew my first clown was a female becuase she was already about 3 years old, and she was big. usually if you want to pair up GSM's you want to get a small juvenile because the bigger fish will become the female and the fighting won't last as long.

The female will beat up the newer smaller juvenille and essentially the smaller fish becomes the male. This is determned after the female establishes her dominance and shows her role as being female.

My smaller juvie was beaten up, but they paired up fairly quick.

it's really cool when they pair up. Good luck!

Buy a little guy, and get a clear plastic container with holes in it. Submerge it near the female, and let her acclimate to him for a week for so.

It's worked for me like a charm both times I've tried it.

This is a good method. When I bought my second maroon clown I just plopped it in the tank and watched alot of fin fly from the major fight. The larger clown could easily kill the smaller if you dont tank some sort of preventive measures.

So what should I look for if i wanted to buy two clowns? I want to get an orange one and a black and white one or maroon one.

It's best to keep like pairs. Two juveniles will most often form a bonded pair. Buy them at the same time. Mixing species is not recommended. While it may work when the fish are young, as they mature, there will likely be aggression.
