Why you post in SFS 12? This is a touchy subject regardless. There are some people who allow six mouths or more to go by before thinking about water change. On the other hand some folks change small quantities every day or every other day. Ask yourself why am i making a water change and why am i changing X amount? My answer would be to keep nitrates and p04 at an acceptable level which build up due to feeding and to replenish lost minerals, trace elements use up by the inhabitants. Most of these minerals, elements and trace elements are not tested for by the average reefer so it hard to find out how much of what is lost. Some of which are not important though. So most go on guess work and throw money down the toilet. I can't tell you how much water and how often to change. I hope i helped you to figure it out though.

well im new to reefing but my tank i have to admit hasnt had a water change in over 2 months and even before maybe once evry 2 months i change 5 gallons although testing was good..

i just add top off water RO.. i test water and and evrything is great corals are exploding . all i do is feed estenial elements once a week and plankton .. also pellets for the clowns and tangs . once a week some mysis .. all im running is protein skimmer with about 8 mangrove plants in tank... trying to keep natural and simple also dont over feed tank very careful ..there is one more thing about my tank i have a lot of rock 60 percent of tank has rock .. also have a fluval running for flow but gutted it and its full of more rock...
i know your supposed to change but honestly water test good why change nothing dying.. i also add calcuim once a week although it test ok . well thats my tank 29 gallon full of rock lol .. i forgot to tell you guys my live stock is full. yellow tang , hippo tang , naso tang , 2 clowns , blue damsel , fire shrimp , 3 snails , scooter blenny ..many corals .. not a master with those complicated systems but tank looks good .. lucky for now .. also i made led lighting from ebay .. bought heat sink and hung from ceiling with wire looks cool but the effect and shimmer is really nice ... any comments or suggestions let me know . thank you .. i will add a picture of tank when i get chance new to this .. so far enjoying the new hobby... about 2 yrs into it . and did like 20 yrs ago but back then it wasnt advanced as today.. more knowledge can be found on interent and forums like this makes it much easier...

ps :yes upgrading to bigger tank going to move then i will change. all fish are small right now .. your tank looks clean in your picture i think you doing fine job ..enjoy

i do a 25 gallon change every 2 weeks there you go everyone is different it is just what works for you btw 90 gallon tank 40 breeder sump 100 gallons total
I have roughly the same volume with about 14 fish. I change 15 gallons every two weeks. Oh!, it's not what work for you, is what work for the inhabitants.

10% every week. Because it doesn't take that long (making 10% every week is easier than 25% every two weeks or more), it avoids problems with shocks due to salinity changes (just in case) and lets me compensate any low/big salinity issues due to adding livestock (aka removing water for the dripping method which is compensated by ATO), it helps giving trace elements to corals without resorting to expensive chemicals. It helps exporting nitrates and phosphates.

You have to remember that in the wild, the animals get thousands of gallons of water every minute... Letting the different chemicals they need deplete then have a rush of it, then deplete etc is sub-optimal. And the real issue is not having animals survive, it's about having them thrive. Water changes are one of the easiest ways to get that.
