How to get rid of Mildew smell from water mixing can?

Hello peoples, I have been using 4 different 32 gallon Brute garbage cans for mixing water and water changes for the past 3-4 years and never had a problem. One can for fresh RO/DI water with a pump, One can for dirty water, and two cans for mixing new water. About 2 months ago I observed one of the mixing water cans developed a mildew smell. I have never had this problem before and don't know what caused it. I am now trying to get rid of the smell using vinegar. I put in a half gallon of vinegar with about 4.5 gallons of ro/di water and ran a pump to splash the mixture in the can for the past 2 weeks and the smell is still there.
1) What would of caused the mildew?
2) How can I get rid of the smell and still use the can for mixing water for my tanks?
3) Can I still use the can to mix water in this can if it still has a mildew smell?
4) Has any one else had this problem?

The smell is probrably from leaving water in the bottom of the container for awhile, I would use Baking soda( arm and hammer) and scrub the bottom of the container then rinse it really well. Maybe a few rinses, The baking soda will not hurt your tank if rinsed properly.

I do the same, every month quick wash with Clorox wipes, rinse real well and let air dry; this also eliminated the brown film I used to get as well.

I don't leave any water stagnant in the cans. When ever there is water in a can I keep a pump circulating it.

Would it cause a problem if I put bleach and water in the can with a pump circulating it?

I say bleach also. If your nervous about using it, you can always run some dechlorinator(sp?) in there

So I would use bleach to soak and clean the can then use a de-chlorinator to neutralize the bleach.

There was a tread on here a while back about cleaning buckets used for mixing water anyway dirty buckets can spike your water with amonia and so on nothing but problems . I clean mine after every water change and dont have to worry about a thing.

Yep I wash and dry before every WC.
I have yet to get any smell from the bucket I have been using.

we use baking soda on our water coolers for after the winter cleaning. leaves no traces.
