Rich, I don't really like to give advice since I don't like being rediculed. But I'm going to step out, and do it anyway. For those that want to knock my methods, you really need to come see my tanks. Then you can knock me if you want.
I have been running SW for about 6 years. Started with fish only, about a year later went to corals. Through those first years I constantly battled green hair algea, and red slime. I didn't have a RO/DI unit, I used a "cheap" DI, and or water conditioners. Started with a 75g, upgraded to a 120g. When I moved 2/2006 I lost all of my live stock but a couple of anemone,a leather, and an eel. I was very sick, and couldn't tend to the tanks consequently things got even worse. I started them back up in June,2006 when I felt a little better.
In August my best friend died, and I inherited her tank & live stock. MR came to my rescue switching her tank for mine. Tanks were awful, and I got pretty much the same advice you are getting here. In February,2007 MR once again came to my rescue, and we made all sorts of changes. At last no more hair algea, had a very small spot of red slime briefly in the rear of the tank(it's gone).
Now for the changes that were made.
1. New RR tank with duo overflows.
2. Installed a 5 stage RO/DI
3. Installed 2 phos reactors(1 for carbon, 1 for phosar)
4. Got rid of my refugium
5. Incorporated micron sock
6. Started rinsing food
7. Did 30% water changes(trying to remove as much built up phosphates in the rocks)
8. Got new sand
9. Added automatic doser(dosing Bi-Ionic part 2)
10. Incorporated automatic top off.
11. Got better lighting(3-175 SE MH with 2 VHO)
I kept my old skimmer(Berlin Turboflotor 1000 multi), simply changed the pump to the OceanrunnerPH2500. This is the one thing that I was going to change due to everyone here telling me to get a bigger/better skimmer. I am glad I never did the upgrade on that one. Saved me a few hundreds.
Ever since those changes were made I've seen no more algea, or red slime. My biggest problem now is I can't grow any algea especially macro algea. And a few floodings caused by the micro sock.
Don't know if this helps, just thought I'd throw my .02 into the mix here.
