Stripping all the phosphates from your water quickly (which will likely drop your alk as well if it's a GFO based media) is a bad thing. I would pickup a phosban reactor and some phos media, phosban, rowaphos, phosar etc.

You can run it off a maxi jet 400 or 600. If you want to get really fancy buy two reactors and hook one into the other. This way you can run both off of one pump. PLace carbon in the first and phosban in the second as carbon can take more flow than phosban can.

Carbon will remove one type of phosphates while the phosban will remove another. Together it should help out. Please be advised that a cleanup crew likely won't do much for this type of problem. The way to deal with it is to attack the problem not the symptom.

Tony from www.reefexotics.com (MR Sponsor) stocks them.

Doesn't bother my acros..But I only had frags when I did this...Added baking soda religiously to my tank with top off never experienced any drops in alk.....You'll probably have to get it from online or animal pantry in jersey on 1 and 9..

What has been your closest change to the appearance of the algae? What big change do you think set it off? When was the last time you added a fish? And recent deads that you haven't been able to get out of the tank or disappearances of livestock?

Well lets see it is not as brown any more just alot of hair all over the rocks and green and brown on the sand(all over the tank) i have tried stiring the sand to get rid of most. I am guess when i changed into the larger tank that set this off i know when i added some of the new rock it could have done this. I havent had any die offs in this tank

Rich, I don't really like to give advice since I don't like being rediculed. But I'm going to step out, and do it anyway. For those that want to knock my methods, you really need to come see my tanks. Then you can knock me if you want.

I have been running SW for about 6 years. Started with fish only, about a year later went to corals. Through those first years I constantly battled green hair algea, and red slime. I didn't have a RO/DI unit, I used a "cheap" DI, and or water conditioners. Started with a 75g, upgraded to a 120g. When I moved 2/2006 I lost all of my live stock but a couple of anemone,a leather, and an eel. I was very sick, and couldn't tend to the tanks consequently things got even worse. I started them back up in June,2006 when I felt a little better.
In August my best friend died, and I inherited her tank & live stock. MR came to my rescue switching her tank for mine. Tanks were awful, and I got pretty much the same advice you are getting here. In February,2007 MR once again came to my rescue, and we made all sorts of changes. At last no more hair algea, had a very small spot of red slime briefly in the rear of the tank(it's gone).
Now for the changes that were made.
1. New RR tank with duo overflows.
2. Installed a 5 stage RO/DI
3. Installed 2 phos reactors(1 for carbon, 1 for phosar)
4. Got rid of my refugium
5. Incorporated micron sock
6. Started rinsing food
7. Did 30% water changes(trying to remove as much built up phosphates in the rocks)
8. Got new sand
9. Added automatic doser(dosing Bi-Ionic part 2)
10. Incorporated automatic top off.
11. Got better lighting(3-175 SE MH with 2 VHO)

I kept my old skimmer(Berlin Turboflotor 1000 multi), simply changed the pump to the OceanrunnerPH2500. This is the one thing that I was going to change due to everyone here telling me to get a bigger/better skimmer. I am glad I never did the upgrade on that one. Saved me a few hundreds.

Ever since those changes were made I've seen no more algea, or red slime. My biggest problem now is I can't grow any algea especially macro algea. And a few floodings caused by the micro sock.

Don't know if this helps, just thought I'd throw my .02 into the mix here.

i truly appreciate you giving me this info. I guess i am getting a reactor i dont really understand them

There is nothing to them. Before I got mine I was totally intimidated by them. You put the media in it, hook up a small pump or power head to the intake hang it, or put it in your sump. Plug your pump in, rinse the media by allowing the returning water to flow into a bucket until it runs clear then put the return back into the sump or tank where ever it is that you are going to place.
