Jim, what's the difference between both?

from seachem's site:
Reef Iodide? is a concentrated (8,000 mg/L) stabilized potassium iodide source for reef aquaria that will restore and maintain iodide levels to those found in natural sea water. It is formulated to provide a safe source of iodide that will not convert to toxic free iodine under storage or reef conditions. Iodine is as toxic as chlorine and should never be used in a reef system. However, iodide is as safe as chloride.

Ok let me take a shot at this as I am constantly reading up on anything I can find reef related since I spend the day fielding questions like this. As far as anyone can tell Iodine serves many purposes in the reef tank although many are just speculation based on known properties of Iodine. In all studies I have come across or read about it has been shown that Iodine is a benefit to the reef and if not dosed (or proper levels maintained) can have negative effects. Iodine (and this is purely what I have gathered on my own from others research) helps with polyp extension and overall health of coral tissue, aids in maintaining color of coral tissue, has known properties as an astringent and thus is believed to help corals fight off disease and infection. From my own care of several types of reef tank both in the store and out I have noticed that the addition of Iodine to tanks containing soft corals helped them stay at their full size and the longer they went without the dose the more shriveled they became. I have experimented a little with some xenia colonies in the store and both Iodine and calcium help them to keep pumping (especially the calcium, this is purely observational) as they would become droopy if left alone long enough. So in conclusion I can sum up all of my Iodine knowledge in one small sentence: Iodine good; no Iodine, not so good. I use xenia for a lot of additive tests since it is some what sensitive but grows back very quickly and reacts almost instantly to what I put in it's small nano tank. I hope this helps shed some light on Iodine if anyone has any questions feel free to PM me.

From my experience the best Iodine suplement to use is Kent's Tech-I. It's a time release formula for Iodine so even if you overdose what they tell you to put in , you're not really overdosing since the Iodine becomes available in (I think) 3 stages. The regular Iodine gets used up too quickly while the Tech-I is like dosing daily from what I understand.

I dose kent marine IODINE 10 drops a day in my 75g reef. no problems. if I did that with chlorine, the tank would die, so I think Seachem is off a bit. Unless Kent marine is packaging iodide and calling it iodine--> but that would be pointless (but not impossible).

my shrimp/ crabs molt regularly. and my softies/ lps seem to be doing great.

I scratch my butt and put my right hand in my tank once per week and all my acros are healthy and colorful.

So, scratching my butt takes place of a proper setup and good maintence?:) This is the problem with many reefers testimonies to the benefits of iodine.

I agree with Rich, I may add iodine, but i can't say it is doing anything.
I do it because I always have, and I think one reason my tank does ok is consistency.
I know having a few(lots) beers helps LOL.

Iodide? Or Iodine?

Just read on my purple up bottle that Iodine is included in the mixture to aid in coraline growth....

But on the flip side i dose regulary (1x week) of ESV Iodide...Havent seen much progress with or w/o but I vote what ever works for you....

Still really dont know the difference but Ive also heard it helps with molting (Iodine) but my shrimp go through theres every month or so regarless....
