I couldnt agree more. This is a hobby where people could help each other but instead try to make money off there friends. I set up a 75g for a friend of mine recently and gave him prob over a dozen frags and corals for free. I even ave him a ton of equipment at cost or a loss just to get him going. Best way he could repay me is to pay it forward to someone else. If we all shared a few frags around this hobby would be even more amazing.

I agree but I prefer more of a "here's a free polyp of a great zoa that I have. If mine's die out I just ask for one polyp!"

Friends on here give each other deals and I've seen others give free things before so it's not a complete loss. It's for those with deep pockets and rare items. Supply and demand is like any other hobby. You almost never get anything for free.

I have been very lucky to meet a few old school reefers that never asked for $ for frag they where just happy to help out and discuss the reef that have helped me so much in this hobby and I never would have gotten as far as I have. I hope 1 day I'll have a grown out tank and can return the favor to someone just getting in!

Great article

Interesting history lesson. It is a sad story but I suppose it is unrealistic to think that once a hobby becomes big enough, the money making opportunity won't become an important focus.

I liked the observation that you become a guru when you invent and sell a technology. I sensed this from the forum posts.

In the spirit of the article I'd like to give away a nice size frag of hawkins echinata to someone with an established SPS tank and return all I want is a frag back if I lose my colony. Willing to also do it with my Cali tort. ( 2 of my favorite pieces.)

I try trading but the forums dont seem to be ideal for trading.

I try sharing ideas but the internet has become a way to pass time as oppose to a "free" source of information

Eventually everything is monitized and the forums and hobby were not an exception.

The article is refreshing but he contradicts himself as he too has corals "named" after himself as if he and every other "high end" dealer were biologists who discovered the species.

I have met a few nice and genuine individuals and a lot of fakes pretending to be friendly in order to sell rediculously expensive frags to unsuspecting newbies and impulse shoppers

I kind of never liked the guy in the article as i always felt that many of their "contributions" were not objective. I believe they benefitted from many brands and vendors hr and others loved to plug into every article or video

Mike Paletta has never been a "dealer " or vendor, nor did he name anything after himself. If others decide to name a coral they got from him in his honor and as a way to identify lineage that is not self branding nor of the authors doing. I'm also not sure who you are referring to that you don't like as you use he and they in the same sentence. Do you mean Paletta, Reefbuilders or all authors?

Jim, very nice gesture.

I mean the likes of Paletta, Sanjay and others that have written articles and or participated in videos and I guess I am pooling them into the group of self righteous vendors.

If plugging all the name brands and stores has been done absolutely free of charge I would be surprised. I realize that with being located at Pratt, the many years your tank has been up and the swap also being held there you have probably met them and very well know them. I am basing my opinion on their videos and articles I read. A lot of branding and brand pushing, if that was done for free than I guess many should be thankful with them.

Again, since you may know them I will recognize that they have taken the time to share.

That's what I meant.

Reef Builders is another site that simply introduces new products, its like the 2 a.m. infomercial. You just have to review archived articles to see how many products they introduce and make an attempt to hype and the product flops or ends up being useless.

Now, if you do know them and you are stating that the live goods that I have seen being sold with the name Sanjay or Paletta was not of their own doing, than I much further understand your response.

Cherry Corals, Corn Bread, Jason Fox, Unique Corals, Reef Raft and all the other stores and or coral fraggers that buy basically from the same wholesalers come up with ridiculous names are part of the reason why Paletta wrote the article in the first place. When frags are going to cost $300 for 1" it becomes very hard to share at random.

I am not opposed to a business making profit, I am critical of exxagerated and or deceptive marketing campaigns that prey on human impulses such as the use of credit cards and impulse shopping to market and sale a coral that should have a retail value of $300, photo shop it a bit, hype it and market it as a collector's piece for $1200.

Yes, there are truly hard to get pieces that rightly so command a high price, take a look at the internet websites and forums and tell me if there should be so many "rare" pieces and digitally edited pieces.

Anyway, the bone I had to pick is that brand pushing is usually done for commissions or product gifts.

If I am way off then I am way off but I have seen and read the brand pushing attempts AND I have seen on the internet the personal naming of corals.

Thanks for the article, times have definitely changed. Walking into a lhs is a different experience now, all frags. Back in the day it was an adventure to find the ugly colony and have it turn into a gem in your tank...

But no matter what I still love this hobby :)
