I've heard good reviews on this supplement from a few different reefer. The ingredients list contains the following:

Trace Minerals: Calcium, Cobalt, Copper, Extract, Fluorine, Iodine, Iron, Magnesium, Manganese, NaCl, Phosphorus, Potassium, Selenium, Sulfur, Zinc

Notice that copper is in the list. What's the deal with this. Why would we want to put any copper into the system? Is a trace amount actually beneficial?

actually there is very little copper in pennies nowadays. It wouldn't kill your tank at the rate in which it breaks down if at all. There are traces of copper in regular sea water as are many other elements. The same elements we find in a bottle of vitamins are great if we take them in the proper dosage but deadly if we overdose. You can die from drinking too much water or even taking in too much protein. The secret is to maintain a balance, the same goes for our tanks.

Stay away from Coral Vital! Unless they have changed the product, it totally ruined my tank in its early years. Shortly after starting it, I had a hair algae outbreak that was from hell......every rock looked like cousin itt.....every week I'd take out each rock and scrub it off, then do it over agin the next week...along with weekly water changes. Some belated research on the internet brought up more horror stories....it took nearly 2 years for the algae out break to disappear. This was about 9 years ago or so.....I would avoid any and all products with the name Marc Weiss.....(or are you mixing it up with Kent's Coral Vite? That is harmless if you don't overdo it...though unnecessary in my view...) Take care, Eric

Its called copper sulfate. Slightly different from a metal but same makeup its just that corals cannot take copper metals into their systems. I would remove that penny pronto.

Also that algae outbreak could have been caused by an excess of nutrients and trace elements. They only thing I put in my tank besides my hands is 2 part.
