I was using clams (top necks specifically) for a while. I switched to oysters about 6 mos. ago. They say a large oyster 2.5-3" can filter 16-18 gallons an hour.
You can use Blue Points .40-.75 cets a piece

clams

I thought the clams that are sold in supermarkets and fish stores are frozen (dead)???? How do you know if they are alive in the system before they ruin the water if they die?

They are only being sold DEAD if they are frozen... and they are killed by the freezing process. A dead unfrozen clam is not going to smell too good after a couple of hours.
You really wont. But these shellfish are fairly hardy, and the meat will shrivel up to almost nothing before they die. So it doesn;t have too much impact on your system. If it does, like anything else that dies in your system. WC WC WC

My grandaughters brought home some clams from the beach and put them in what was an acclimating tank, and the next day they were all dead. Thank God I didn't let them put them in my reef. What a disaster that would have been....

Manila clams are smaller...about 1-2" in length, less round. They are always sold live, usually by the pound ($1.99 or so, in Asian markets). In terms of oysters, I have a big long oyster that came in with live rock...I have had it since my tank started...it is currently about 3.5"-4" long...about 10 years ago I accidentally broke off the front half while cleaning the tank...wasn't hurt at all...grew back over the years. I think we probably all have small oysters and mussels that came in with the rock we have.

I had opened up some of them, put them in the blender with some other fish and tried some fresh fish food for my fish last year.. I'm not always a good host,,lol..

Asian green mussels or other shellfish work and are far hardier than anything I have encountered as far as temp and general parameters. Also, Bob you have to consider the fact that they will need food and at the rate in which they feed 30-40 would probably end up starving.

Good point Total xkuyq wvx long name easier to just type anything.
Don't clams filter waterand if I keep my nitrates at 0 and phosphates at 0.02 do you think it would be bad to dump blended fish and shrimp fish guts and stuff of that nature in as coral food and clam food, this what I planned on doing if I decided to keep that many clams.. Current total is 15 clams includding 7 3 to 4in maximas, 2 2in..
