Hi all, I got a 6 gallon jbj off a fellow member last week and decided to start a thread so here it is.

Got the tank on 5/15 complete with rock and sand. The tank was covered in a decent amount of hair alage and I did my best to scrape off what I could from the glass and the rocks before setting it up.

I swapped out the stock pump for a minijet 606 and added a hydor flow deflector. No other mods as.of yet.

Im running filter floss in chamber 1, in chamber 2 I have chemipure elite on the bottom followed by another layer of floss and ontop of that some phosban, in chamber 3 I have the pump and a 25 watt heater.

I decided to use catalina sea water instead of mixing my own because its just easier for me.

Tank has been up and running for 7 days and the curent parameters are

Amonia .25 ppm
Nitrate 40 ppm
Ph 8.2
Temp 79

Not gonna bother with any other tests until the tank is done with its cycle.

Curent live stock

3 nerite snails
3 nassarius snails
1 mexican turbo ( to be removed before after cycle and all alage gone )

Any tips, comments, or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Why do you have the clean up crew in while the tank is still cycling? That's a lot of ammonia.

What's the nitrite at?

Is the phosban in a bag? and chemi elite has ferric oxide in it already so phosban is just redundant in a small system like that.

I would just leave it alone than and give it a few days. Once the cycle is complete and you start doing water changes I would divide up the sandbed into small strips and clean them one at a time during WCs because I think after all this (and who knows how well the tank was maintained before you got it since it had all that algae) you probably have a lot of detritus in it. One strip per weekly WC so you don't remove all the good stuff if it's in there.

Thanks for the advice, im definitely taking my time with this tank. In the meantime I was looking at the nanotuners 2.18 36 watt pc lighting upgrade but I cant decide on what lamp configuration to get 1 50/50 and 1actinic or 1 daylight and 1 actinic or other combo ??????

Either your nitrite kit is bad or something isn't right with the tank. I would find another nitrite kit or bring the water to a store or another member that can test it for you just to make sure. With those levels you shaould have at least seen a small bump in nitrite by now.

As for the lights it's just personal preference. If you want it bluer go with the 50/50 and actinic. Personally, I would go with 1 daylight and 1 actinic if they can be turned on and off individually.

Thanks fishluva, I really like this tank. Ive done a bunch of upgrades and I need to edit this thread. I added an extra light, upgraded moon lights, anf upgraded the pump. I tried a koralia nano but it was to much flow for a 6 gallon.

For live stock I have a purple fire fish, tail spot blenny, and a cleaner.shrimp.

For coral I have duncan, frogspawn, star polyps, zoas, ricordea, and a green mushroom so far.
