So yesterday i was a store and they had a bunch of the ORA crazy variants. I noticed something on almost every fish, an extreme underbite and wierd puffed out gills and a stubby face.

Not on the regular just the crazy interbred ones.

Has anyone else noticed.

yes its been that way for the last few years.

mushed faces ` usually from to much light in the rearing tank the fry push against the walls trying to get out of the lights.

fish missing there 2nd gill plate all together. or fish with flared out gill plates

these fish should really be culls. but when people are paying 200$ for them.. who is gonna cull them?

2 weeks ago Iwas at a lfs that had maybe a dozen of the variant type clowns and all of them looked hinky in one way or another.

I simply won't buy any clown fish from ORA.

If you look at most of the fish ORA produces they have defects of some kind. I always assumed it was poor selection of broodstock and nobody keeping track of bloodlines but Arati's explanation makes sense too. Years ago ORA sold what they called "stubby" clowns I think maybe once or twice before they never showed up on availability again. They looked like their heads had been pushed back and up into the body so that the dorsal fin was starting just behind the eyes and the rest of the spine was warped. They were a mess.

It's hard for a store to avoid the fish because ORA does require a small fish order before you can order any of their corals on any order. So if you want the corals you have to buy some fish. Otherwise if it's just fish I need to get in I would go with Proaquatix. Their standards are way higher and they don't allow out any deformities. Even their assessors look the same as a wild fish you can't really tell the difference.

LFS thats why i sold my breeding pair of GBR clowns to proaquatics. They are so good about it they wouldnt even let me have any GBR babies till they are perfect.

I really feel like ORA has sold out themselves. They have made it where people dont want regulari clowns they want designer clowns. No one realizes that designer clowns arent what you think. They are rejects and it shows in their fish.

I was flabbergasted yesterday when i saw all the fish and their noses and bottum and gills were messed up. They all look like bulldogs

I know stores that won't even buy anything from ORA because of the fish. The corals are really too good to pass up though and I give Seth a hard time whenever I can about Proaquatix not doing corals, otherwise I'd just order from them.

I got in a few of the "designer" clowns from proaquatix and I still have one of the Black Ice Snowflakes I'm growing out a little and they look more like normal clowns than the regular percs and ocellaris ORA sells. I was really impressed when I got picasso clowns from Pro for the first time and they didn't have any extra finnage (the ORA picasso sometimes have streamers).

I wish i took pictures yesterday.

It makes me wonder how long they are going to ride the designer clown wave. If they dont get off soon, they are going to make where no one wants their bread and butter fish.
