Phosban Reactor????

I have been reading some things about phosban reactors, for carbon.
I currently use chemi pure + Purigen in my nano. I have not started using them in my 72 because it is still cycling. It seems like all these things do is give you a medium to pass water directly through the product (Chemipure purigen). Is this true, and if so, cant i just use an old aqua clear or canister filter hooked up to my sump to serve the same purpose. For instance I have a fluval 305 from my old cichlid tank Couldnt i just remove the sponge material and load it up with Product???

In the case of running it with carbon, yes, a Fluval is a good way to put a media reactor on the tank.

In the case of Phosban, no. You need to be able to see how much water flow is going through the phosban in order to make sure you are not blowing it right into your tank. It is a very fine sediment and the phosban reactor is designed so you can view what it looks like so you can regulate the flow.

As long as there is water flowing through the carbon you should be ok. Keep in mind that that canister filter is going to need to be taken apart at least once every 2 weeks and cleaned thoroughly so it doesn't become a detrius trap and a nitrate factory. Also in the event of a power loss it should be taken offline immediately and cleaned because the bacteria in that canister filter will die very quickly and once power is restored and the filter comes back on it may cause some very big problems in your tank.


All of the above being said I use a phosban reactor in my tank and inside of it you will find a bag of chemipure elite. It gets enough flow for my tank. The thing to keep in mind about phosban is that you need to be able to see the phosban tumbling in the reactor so it can be more effective and also it requires less flow than carbon does. I have a MJ400 opened up fully on my phosban reactor.
