How many polyps or heads or whatever consists of a colony?

Reason I am asking is I was set to buy this coral yesterday. The guy said it was a colony. When I met up with this person the coral was so small I had to literally ask where is it? He stated right there. I said wow. Now I've dealt with plenty of great people on here. I guess some are more generous than others when it comes to sizes and quantity. Then people say it's the quality not quantity.

So maybe the question should be what do you consider a colony and what sizes do you guys sell?

What kind of coral was it? Hard to say without knowing what type of coral.

5+ polyps for me.

for me -- anything that is multi branched and golf ball size and larger is a colony
single stick = frag

for me but i have a different opinion, for zoa's 20 plus polyps for sps multi branch and 6" or bigger

Ok. Let's say duncan, torches,hammers,frogspawn,mushrooms,ricordeas,birdnest. Things like that

Would love to know the answer also...maybe I'm overly genourous 20+zoa's to me is a colony...5+ inches on a birdsnest with well over 30 + branches is a colony...hammer with 8-10 heads is a colony...mushroom with 25+ is a colony

If it isn't bigger than 5" then it's not a colony to me Period!

Yea i would say 20+ on zoas is a colony......10+ can be considered a mini colony.....branching hammers, torches, Duncans I would say 10 head plus just cause how long it takes them to grow....chalices, a cans and that sort I'm clueless same with sps.....

Bringing this back up. So what should pricing be for "colonies" in comparison to "frags"? Of course with colonies it takes time to grow and usually these are in people's tanks for years and either there breaking down their tanks or downsizing so there selling as such and don't have the time or no how to frag.
Me myself I like colonies. It brings a instant glow to my tank in comparison to waiting for a so called frag to grow. Yes I understand frags are much cheaper and the reward is more fulfilling watching a frag grow to a colony cause we all know this hobby is about patience

Have no idea but if I see colony for sale I don't open the thread. I'm more into frags and seeing them grow then having a ready made reef tank. As for growing a colony any coral with multibranched and 4in+ I consider a colony

I just want to point out that I hate the term "mini colony" lol ALSO my 2 cents,, a colony is emphatically a colony, just like black is black and white is white. I was watching one of those fish tank reality shows and the marine biologist that works with them referred to acropora as each polyp was like an invertabrate and make up a huge colony of such.

I'm more of the thought of if I like it and I think the price is right buy it who cares what it's called. lol
