Looked at the ad at premium aquatics it's pretty expensive, looks nice but let them get the bugs worked out and they get some competition so the price drops alot.

does anyone know anything about this- types and numbers of LED's used, and what the corresponding values are compared to MH?
Do these LEDs need a special ballast or anything or is this something that an average DIYer with a bit of moonlight experience can knock up?

it certainly has been done on a smaller scale and i think w/ a bit of patience and time, a larger model can be done. a diy may not look as pretty but could get the work done. i would really like to see these in action soon.

If this proves to be a successful product after they work all the bugs out I can see it replacing MN, VHOs, PCs, etc. I know its going to take some time but there are so many advantages. A lot less heat, a lot less power consumption, varaity in lighting.

So they are just your garden variety LED? or are they some weird, developed by NASA, impossible to find and requires a special and very expensive power source LEDs? I'd love to hear what one of the electronics guys on the board has to say. Now who's going to be the guinea pig and buy one so we can all have a look and try and reverse engineer it?

Judging from the specs they provide, it should be regular LEDs, those 30+ LEDs in a par bulbs. ~125W of LEDs could cost you $350-~$500, LED par bulbs cost you about $500 plus cost of housing, driver or cheap asssk resistor driver to DIY. So it's still very costly. I am prototyping one at 54W-so far only seems to be enough for lighting a 30-40G tank. I am sourcing factory to build a 108W within this half year for four feet tanks and expect the selling price to be under $700 which I guess no one would be interested at that price anyway. The good part about using LEDs in the lighting is that they lets you change color tone easily though.

CORRECTIONS

Just found that they changed to use the luxeon type LEDs int he final production units-not the regular 5mm LEDs used in the earlier prototypes.

Now to make a 75W DIY version with 3W luxeon type LEDs would cost you around $400
