Looked at my tanke before leaving for work and noticed my octo-spawn was almost totally retracted, which never happens. While looking at the sump, I noticed the glass of the display tank felt warm to the touch.

I check the RKL, and the temp said 79.5. I check my glass thermometer and it said 90. This freaking thing. I checked it the day before yesterday and the RKL was on point with the thermometer.

I got the RKL second hand, but it only started giving me problems lately. Looks like I am going to have to get the Apex Jr. sooner than I thought.

Does anyone know if the Apex is more reliable? I will look into replacing the temp probe. I suppose it would be cheaper than getting the Apex Jr. but what fun is getting a probe. This hobby is all about upgrading the newers/better thing! :)

Would adjusting the heater 1-2 degrees above the controller circumvent the potential of overheating? So if controller/probe fails, still have the heater's thermostat to rely on? That's how I set mine, but knock on wood I haven't gotten the opportunity to see if it's working as intended, assuming both probe and heater is calibrated.

I was thinking similar widdy. Iam going to do that when I get home. I had it higher with the thinking that the rkl would handle the heaters, but I guess I can't rely on that.

As automated as we get our tanks, we always have to be vigilant.

Yea, I know myself all too well, with automation comes complacency. So I try to build in redundancy where I can. Hope you caught it early and nothing too terrible happened to your tank...

Hopefully I didn't lose anything. The octospawn had a few rentals sticking out, so hopefully I caught it in time. I really like that piece. I set up a fan to evap some of the heat off and I reset my rkl. Hopefully nothing is lost/cooked

So the damage as far as I can tell,

octospawn is still retracted.
frog spawn is retracted, but not as much.
Hammer is retracted.
Have yet to see my lubbock wrasse and pygmy angel
My blue green sympodium is melting (hopefully it recovers. I paid 35 for a 1"x1" frag and it grew to about 3x3)
Lost my cleaner shrimp

booo. I guess I should post these losses in the waaaaaah thread

So, a few days since the havoc, and here are my losses.
I think both of my acans are gone.
My octospawn is only showing one teeny tentacle.
My frogspawn looks like it may recover.
Hammer looks dead
Have yet to see a carcass of my Pygmy angel and lubbock wrasse, so I am keeping hope alive
Sympodium has continued to kelt away.
Xenia is gone
