so i bought this tank from bikinisalt (ray). and there are pictures as to how it is plumbed. i've got the drain pipe coming straight down into the sock holder. the end is not submerged. the return is a mag7. there is a huge sucking noise.

now ray says it was silent when he ran it and i totally believe him. he also used a mag7 for the return but he split the return to a series of reactors.

i've tried the airline tubing trick, as the pictures show. does it matter how long the airline tubing should be? i've tried everything from a foot to a few inches. also, the airline isn't as patent as i'd like it to be when i wedge it through the strainer. but this may not matter since when i hold the tubing in by itself (with no strainer) it still doesn't work. there is a huge sucking noise. is there any way to silence the overflow? i like the clean look of the drain now. talking to ray, we both think that the pump is the problem. if i could dial it down somehow. would this fix the problem? if i tee'd the return and just capped it, would the back pressure be bad for the pump? if i got a phosban reactor, wouldn't the flow be too much if i tee'd it off the return? would that be enough to help? what if i just drilled a couple holes in the return tubing? =)

when return was split in to reactors he actually had less flow in the drain ....so there was no sucking sound.. you could make the simple durso to illuminate your problem

i didn't really want to make a durso. thats the last option in my book. like i said, i like the clean look of the drain as it is, especially since its in the middle. if i tee'd it to a phosban reactor, would it be too much flow to the reactor? and the ball valve idea sounds pretty good...
