Is there no way to 'cover' these without destroying the flow pattern??

No, but I do have to say having run 6 of these pumps for nearly two years, I have never had a fish that wasn't already weakened get caught ON a pump. As noted this is an extremely small Hippo tang we are talking about here, but I'm still not sure how it got sucked into the prop portion if the pump was on? Sucked up against the outside grill I can see as this is where water is drawn to the pump, inside where the prop is, water is pushed away from the pump. Unless the pump was off completely for some reason and the fish swam in and then the pump kicked back on, I'm not sure how this could happen???

:agree:

His warning says "DO NOT MAX your Vortech" which implies the Vortech was on when this occurred.

My pump was set at max A new "Long Pulse Mode" allows for wave pulse timings of between 2 and 60 seconds, enabling you to create slow alternating flow throughout your tank. And, you can couple multiple masters and slaves to create spiraling or gyre flow too!
and the A new "Night Mode" ? one of the most sought after enhancements - enables you to set your pump to operate for 14 hours in whichever mode you select for the day and go back to Night Mode for 10 hours.

I always check my tank before I leave the house but didn't c anything and the pump was still at "night mode" so my guess could be it got suck in when the pump went back to "Long Pulse Mode" and yes is a small hippo(around 2") I don't like the sponge cuz it sucks all the food and C@#@$ in and it does destroy the flow pattern hopefully Kat can come up with some screen idea...

Quick fix would be to use a black tie-wrap and wrap it around the wet side of the pump. Cut excess tie-wrap off... it's not as ugly as the sponge and but should still prevent tragedies like this...

Sorry for your loss, Steve.

Sorry to hear about the Dori :D.. If I have the sponge I will put them but I don't . I should order it . 2 days ago same similar thing happen. I turn of all my circulation and feed the tank and for about 30 minutes I turn them on and walk away..1 hr later, I hear a rattling noise and first thing I check was my return pump and my sump and one thing you know it was a snail that got trap inside and the propeler is hitting it  . Anyway I think I should get the sponge , don't want to see my Blotchy inside :)...

thank Steve i hear u man. can u imagine a small Black tang got suck in there...
