I painted my 120gal with Latex Rustoleum paint Navy Blue and The entire paint peeled off completely. I cleaned it really well and used water to confirm it was completely clean of any solvents and dried it good. The first coat went on good the 3rd was better. I ended up putting 5 coats to finish up the can and when I went to peel the tape off the entire backing came with it.

Use black kitchen contact paper, you can get a large roll for like $6 at Target. You can also buy black vinyl decal paper from sign stores for a little more. Spray water mist on the tank surface and start on one end and work your way to the other end with a small rubber squeegee to get the air bubbles out, kind of like putting car tint paper on.

Did you use flat paint or semi gloss? I used Rustoleum latex. I made sure my tank was clean and dry. I applied the 5 coats and don't understand how it did not stay on. Is there a clear I should put on first? Thanks

I think that I used semi-gloss blue on the back of my tank. I an not 100% sure but I don't think it was a latex paint. Either way it has held up great for the past 2 years.

Oh and I used a spray can. I did two seperate coatings and it came out fantastic.

i used the navy blue latex rustoleam - almost 2 years later it still looks great! I like the way the navy makes the colors pop w/o the typical flat black background...
