Wow! I thought I was at every place on LI. I'll have to check it out.

Have you been to The Reptile Center?

Is the Reptile Center the shop that was on Rte 25 a few blocks east of Stony Brook Road? I think it was, and if so, its the one I mentioned above just under new ownership as of last year.

Donttrip - A couple of great sites to check out for research are
www.chameleonforums.com
www.chameleonnews.com

If you do want one, you're best off starting with a veiled/yemen chameleon no younger than 3 months. Just remember, as cool as they are, and despite people who show photos otherwise, they are mostly a hands off pet. Oh and start with a male as the females, even if not mated, can become gravid and often egg bound if you are not aware of it.

I was hoping to meet some of you guys but I guess it didnt work out. So did anyone get anything? I picked up a baby veiled chameleon, 4 leucolomas ( spelling is probably wrong but they are the black and yellow dart frogs ) and one mourning gecko ( a parthogenic species that does well with dart frogs ). I was hoping to pick up some supplies and feeders but was dissappointed as there wasnt a good selection this time around and I also got there late due to unexpected GI disturbances in Queens.

I was referring to the selection of feeders and supplies. In general, though, the variety offered at this show has declined since I first started attending it four years ago. There are plenty of bearded dragons, leapard geckos and snakes but you used to find a lot more of the oddballs and harder to find reptiles and amphibians. Prices have gone up as well, but I guess thats just like everything else these days. As an example, look at the chameleon's that were there. Screameleons was there as usual, and they are great but only carry Panthers. There were three others as well. One is a breeder and also does reptile rescues - I bought my new veiled from them. The price was higher than they usually go for online and at shows but I know I'm getting it from a good person who will stand behind their animals so it's worth it. The other guy had a cage overcrammed with young veileds he purchased from a breeder. He did not knwo there age, origins or have pictures of the parents. The third guy claimed to be a wholesaler, refused to give me his name ( he did not have a poster or anything with his name - store, company or personal - and when I asked for it his answer was, " I'm a wholesaler and dont normally sell to the public except at this show. " I said thats fine but I still like to know from whom I'm purchasing anything from especially a live animal. He offered to give me his email. Now mind you, this was not asking a store owner for his personal info. This was like going into a storefront without the store name posted outside or inside. Then you look at his chameleons and realize they are under a month old. No reputable breeder will sell a veiled chameleon under 6 weeks, and most prefer to wait until 8 weeks as they are very delicate at that stage and can have a high mortality rate even in experienced care. Sorry for the rant. I'm glad you did well there, and I am happy with my purchases as well. Pics will be posted later.:splitspin

J I completely understand. This is my second show so I have no idea of it's history. I do know that NY state has cracked down alot on things and taken lots of variety away from the collectors. I wasn't able to get any mealies which is what I was really wanting to get so I understand what you are saying about food. I did see that guy with no sign that you were talking about with the veiled's and it fished me off a little. There were others that I knew so I went right to them. Mostly the dealers from geckoforums.net.

Next show is SEPT 7th !!! I plan on going and staying til the end when the deals get better. I hope that pertains to the leo's as well as the rest of the herps. Philly you better be there Punk!!

The guy over at Diesel Reptiles ( see above ) told me that the main supplier of mealies had some kind of wipeout - probably a virus hit his stock or something - so it will be a bit before you can get them. It pissed me off to hear this because I recently lost my colony of them due to negligience ( exams..). I was hoping to pick up some starter colonies of hornworms ( which I can get locally ) and silkworms but only one guy had the former ( and they quickly went as he didnt have much ) and noone had the latter, or the food media. I can order them online but was hoping to save the shipping costs. A lot of other of the usuals were gone - noone had madagascar hissers, mantids, etc. Didnt see any CB RETF's which are usually common around now. I know one of the biggest ( and best ) PDF breeder stopped attending the shows also. As for the crackdown, I thought most of those animals were only illegal to own in NYC ( which is why they never hold the shows there ). Oh well. I hope to make it to the Sept show as well but if not there will be one in LI in November ( though the last one was way overcrowded and I left after a few minutes, stroller was a bad idea).
