Ive been very successful with my LPS, mushrooms, anemones etc. I would like to advance to SPS corals. I love acropora and other brancing forms. I have (2) 150watt MH and (2) 96 watt pc. I have a 110 gallon 30inch high tank. I was wondering if I put the SPS corals near the top of the water I would be okay?

kelvin rating isn't the determining factor in color it used to be. Now we have 10ks that are blue and 14ks that are whiter as well as 10ks that look like 6500s and vice versa. You should be fine if you keep them in the top half (depending on type of acro) to top third of the tank. Light is only one part of what you need to consider when advancing to acros. You also need to look at flow and your parameters and overall stability.

Ive been told I have to work on keeping calcium stable (right now im at about 450), not sure how to do that. But I keep my refugium on almost all night to keep my ph stable, as well alkalinity (I believe this works for the alkalinity too, I guess I shoud put a buffer in too for that). All the rest of my levels are perfect.

Before "advancing", you need to understand the relationship between calcium, alkalinity and magnesium and methods to keep those levels stable. Trust me, there's no 'I guess' in SPS.

Thanks guys for all the great info. I use a ph buffer, is that the same as a alkalinity buffer? I saw a product the other day that claims to keep ph and alkalinity stable.
