would they do okay in a bare bottom tank, or would they freak out with out sand?

never put them in a bare bottom tank. They do love to dig and hide in the sand so I wouldn't want to put them in a tank with it.

what do you think of the idea of making a sand area in a B.B tank ?

I've seen people on RC with large B.B tanks place a tupperware container with sand in it for the wrasses to dig in.
