I am looking for a 'starter' Clam. I've never kept one and would like to start small and relatively cheap to see how they like my system.
Also looking for some mangroves for my refugium. Preferably in NJ

Rob, just some advice. I would stay away from anything really under 3 inches. They are just way to fragile and require much more feedings or a large established tank. Shoot for a healthy open clam from a healthy system.

Some may disagree with me, but that's the advice i have always received. I also wouldn't buy anything that was recently shipped. A good store should be watching them for a few days before offering them forsale. One you put the clam in a desired spot, leave it and do not touch it. I generally dig out a nook, add some small rubble and then place the clam on top.

Look for something with full extension and check to make sure he is light sensitive. I have seen a friend go through 5+ small 1.2-2" clams and they never make it .

Yeah jonny is dead on with that , I have kept clams of all sizes and the small ones require too much attention , avoid it and get a bigger one with a nicely spread out mantle , pic it with caution as some also can have hitchhikers on the outer shells , I saw one with aptasia on its side about a week ago!!! Take your time and you will know when you got the right one !! Also post a pic or two when u get it!!
