As you can obviously see, heaters do fail. Believe it or not, heaters are the #1 piece of equipment in our hobby to fail. Fortunately they are one of the least expensive pieces of equipment we use and therefore are inexpensively replaced. Seeing your heater fail should do two things in your mind. #1 should be to plug your heater into some type of controller (Ranco, Apex, Reefkeeper) to prevent a future failure from cooking your tank. #2 would be to replace your failed heater with a NEW heater to lessen the likelihood that you'd receive a faulty heater from someone else. I personally would never, EVER use a used heater. They are cheap enough to buy new and offer you peace of mind.
Hope this helps,
Russ
