"Sun Coral" is a common name for Species from the Genus Tubastrea. "Dendro" is a common name for Species from the Genus Dendrophyllia. Both Genuses belong to the family Dendrophyllidae.

Generaly speaking Tubastrea sp. are in the distribution chain (collector to exporter to importer to wholesaler to LFS to you) much, much longer than Dendrophyllia sp. making them weaker upon receipt due to the fact that no one feeds them along the way... until we get them. Tubastrea sp. also seem to require more consistant feedings IME. In short, "sun coral" will require a little more TLC when it gets into your hands compared to "dendros".

Physicaly speaking, as mentioned above, Dendrophyllia typically has larger oral discs (polyps) than Tubastrea, but both can vary greatly in color (pink, orange, yellow, black, red, clear) and growth patterns (branching, balling, etc.).

Not that i want to get involved in this debate but the google link you provided only shows one guy who says he has a black dendro but asking for IDs and then later on the captivereef link you provided earlier and in that post the mention of black is used when referring to both types of coral so not a definitive "yes black dendro exists".

At this point i dont think your gonna win anyone over and the back and forth is getting pretty old. Continue to debate of you guys prefer...

I must be missing something bc every link you provided said that they were NOT black dendros. They all said that they were sun corals. Yes, there was 1 or 2 threads asking about them, but as far as I could see no one said they were black dendros...everyone corrected the op and said they were black suncorals.

To your point that all suncorals are in the dendro family: there is a more specific [hobby]name for them, SUNCORAL.
This is like you saying look at my 20"x20" rectangle, and I say "no, that is a square", and you say back, "it's a rectangle"....do you get my point?

Unless I missed something where people proved they were dendros???? But I think everyone said they were suncorals, no?

I quote:
"As simon said. treat just as any other sun coral. lots and lots of food, medium current/shaded location."

"Treat as any other suncoral" means it is a suncoral!!!!

Does this mean the sky is purple?!?!

https://www.google.com/search?q=purple+sky&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&client=safari
And, the one black coral that came up in your picture link was a SUNCORAL.
