Hi all. Just a quick intro: I'm new to these forums, not too new to the saltwater hobby. Living in Woodside right now, so I would love to get to know other hobbyists in the area :) I recently quit working at a pet store that sold marine fish (don't recommend that place at all) to continue grad school, and beyond that experience, I read all I can about reefs and want to still learn more.

I had a 10g reef that I had to give away when I moved here and have been longing to start one up again. Researching different ones, I've decided I want to try getting a 12g Cadlights at some point. Does anyone know if any place around here happens to sell them, or do I have to order it from their website?

Any response is appreciated.

Welcome to the MR boards - first off!

Secondly - before you go out and spend $$ on a new tank just search the For sale threads here - many people sell tanks each week, and yes, Nano tanks too. I don't know about a Cadlights tank but a 12g is pretty small - you should be able to find a few NanoCube 12 or 24g or Aquapod of the same size.

Also consider the livestock you want to keep and its lighting/space requirements. Feel free to post your thoughts/concerns here and I'm sure people will chime in.

Just FYI - I have a NanoCubeDX 24g, with Tunze Skimmer and 150W Sunpaq MH lighting. So if you have questions.....just ask.

Best,
Chris

Thanks for the replies! mstrofdisaster: Nice set up btw for your nano. I was toying with the idea of a 24g, but I'm not sure if I have the space for it. And I like the challenges that a 12g brings. I researched different nanos and like the Cadlights the best. What do you think?: http://www.cadlights.com/product_info.php?cPath=2&products_id=117 (comes with 4 32w t5 lights, refugium, surface skimmer, etc.) The only thing that's weird about it is the glass canopy for the 12g is about $155, but it's $20 for the 24g...:irked: Found out that it's produced in Brooklyn too, so I could check it out locally. In the meantime though, I'll definitely look through the tanks for sale here too.

As for what I'm going to keep, I ultimately want to put a pumping xenia, green stars, and a couple zoos. Maybe try a LPS like an open brain, but not sure if the small size of the tank would accodate that with its sweeper tentacles. And 2 fish. I had a pair of ocellaris and a purple firefish in my old 10g nano, but the firefish died I heard when I gave it away although the clowns were doing well. Crtiticisms/ comments/ suggestions are welcome about livestock, since I'm still speculating.

Oh, and I was wondering, where do people get their water for nanos? Like pre-mixed or R.O. or what? Where I used to live, there was a place to get free R.O. water once you bought a jug, so I bought 5 of those jugs and used that to maintain my water (but that was a different time, different country).

I appreciate any comments and already love this website :) I'll definitely be checking these forums out often!

I was also wondering, for those with smaller reef tanks, what water people use. Do people buy RO/DI units for nanos, or do they just use tap water? Or pre-mixed seawater? Before I moved, there was a place where I could get free R.O. water refills after buying a jug, but I'm sure there's no place like that around here.

Don't use NYC tap water, please...

For RO/DI, most people use a 5 stage unit. Go check:
http://www.airwaterice.com/product/1COMPACT/Compact_75_GPD_Reefkeeper_RODI.html

for a good unit. I bought this unit a year ago and couldn't be more pleased with it. Premixed gets quite expensive (not to mention heavy) after a while. Pick a good synthetic salt mix and make your own.

And you are correct, we give no free refills here in the Big Apple:frown:....lol.

you can also look into the 30g finnex tanks....they are pretty nice too....
if you dont want to have it shipped(and save a few bucks)....i know a place in brooklyn that sells it....its the exact same tank/and equipment with a imported name...or a biocube is nice too....but keep searching...theres alot of stuff in the market for nanos...but if you can ...do somethng bigger than a 12g...you;ll be happier at the end...

Thanks for the replies/suggestions and all the PMs. I guess I'll have to get a RO/DI unit then; too bad more things in NY aren't free :P I'll keep checking the for sale area too (think I've found a good tank, but I'll keep my eyes peeled for other things).

I'm sure I'll have more questions when I get things going again.
