What's the difference between a calcium reactor and a kalk reactor?

Kalk reactor disolves calcium hydroxide into the water colum which raises your ph as well as adding calcium to the water.

A calcium reactor uses CO2 to lower PH in the water to disolve "coral skeletons". In theory the skeletons have the same calcium and elements that coral needs to grow.

You learn somethink everyday.Any particular reason why you want to use a kalk reactor.Do you have to add calcium hydroxide for the reactor to disolve.I just bought a ph controller and realized that i may have lost some corals in the past because my ph was too high 8.6 and up .

I think it's easier to raise ph .So what do you think is worse high ph or low.I'v seen corals just melt or pop open after the ph peeked at 8.7.
