I would not use a large/small aquatic setup to teach responibility to special Ed.kids.Electicity,water,glass and kids don't mix, too dangerous IMO and what is it suppose to stimulate btw?

... for the past 2.5 years I've been a science teacher for students in special needs programs as well as general education. I think if you (in any classroom setting) have developed a culture of care and trust you can have many different tools for engagement.

I first started with a 20g SW tank in my classroom and then moved to the 55 g in the lobby. I also have a pet snake, turtles and rabbits that I actually have the students take care of. They are 10x better than me when it comes to nurturing the animals and remind me of safety (i.e. my hands are wet!) and harass me when I forget to replenish the food.

So, I'd say, to be sure you do a lesson on safety, go over rules, expectations and procedures regarding the tank (any new element). If you trust yourself, your students and their friends (omg, they had tons of students and teachers visiting my classroom!)

In terms of stimulation, I don't know the purpose the other teacher has for it but my students find a sense of purpose and responsibility in care taking for the tank/classroom. Having something to care for does have some calming effects.

It also stimulates learning and can be used to make connections to real world content. The students become interested in learning how to treat/care for animals, can learn about water chemistry, ecology, etc. It can be a useful tool in the right class environment.

That's my experience
