The only Gigas I have seen for sale was from an ORA order at wonderful world of fish and they were small. 3-4" but they are more readily found in the online stores. I just recently got a h.hippopus from Thatpetplace.com. They are expensive and come in quite big at 5-7". If you think your going to find a hippopus through vendors think again unless someones been avoiding my WTB hippopus threads. I wouldn't count on stores unless you can make the drive down to That pet place.

For what its worth, Gigas as butt ugly (big brown blob) and get insanely huge very quickly. You can find a nicer colored h.hippopus but you have to pick them out and with the availability its next to impossible. Otherwise your stuck with a brown blob that doesn't expand past the shell, cool none the less but has 0 wow factor for people checking out your tank.

With that said why not go for something brighter and "showy" like maxima's, crocea's, maybe a blue squammy?

Not all Gigas are ugly...but in general you are correct. The "showy" ones you refer to....well I have many already I am just looking for "unusual" specimens(aren't we all...lol)...:splitspin I also have to say even the dull drab Gigas is an amazing thing to see when they get large....12+"

Yeah I agree, I want the clam more for the size that it reaches rather than the colors, although I used to have one that was green with bright blue and black speckles on it in my old system

Live aquaria Divers Den has been listing the Hippocous or how ever you spell it clams for 49.99 plus shipping.

Instead of buying a giga clam which is just about impossible to find local why not buy a derasa they are very similar. One just comes with a much more reasonable price tag.

Oh I forgot to mention, I already bought the hippo from liveaquaria diver's den earlier this week, got it in on Friday.

Now I'm just looking for a gigas. And it's not so much about how the clam looks, I like how big a gigas gets.
