Starting up a 34g Solana and need some water to cycle my rock and sand with. If anyone lives within a few miles of Hauppauge (Near Smithtown and Ronkonkoma) and are doing a water change in the next few days, I would really appreciate it if I could have your water to set up my tank with. I would be willing to pay a little $ for it, make an offer (but please be generous with water you would throw out anyways) . I can take up to 15 gallons right now. Thanks for taking a look.

Thanks for the advice. Does the shrimp actually work? The rock I bought is dry and I am planning to get "live" sand sold at the reef store which is bagged, with that in mind, if I mixed my own water using dry salt, where are the nitrifying bacteria going to come from? I don't think there would be any in the dried salt or the dried rock, and is there enough in the sand to get the system running quickly? Also, when I think logically, I believe there would be nitrifying bacteria in water obtained from an established tank which would then "seed" my rock as well as contribute to setting up the sands aerobic and anaerobic ecosystems. In addition, I have a couple more reasons I'm posting for water, 1. After searching for local distilled or RO/DI water, the most reasonable place to buy from is the reef store. At the reef store, it's $1.25/gallon for RO/DI water, $1.75/gallon for premixed salt water, or $2/gallon for their established water. With that in mind I would be able to save some money if someone was generous and gave me their water that they would have thrown out after their water change anyway. 2. I have just bought a tank, light, protein skimmer, 46 lbs of dry, live rock and I still need to buy the sand bed and a powerhead to get the tank running; the costs have added up quickly and this seems to be a way to save a little cash to buy some fish and corals later on.

If anyone lives within a few miles of Hauppauge NY (near smithtown and ronkonkoma on Long Island) and are doing a water change in the next few days and has some water I could have, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for reading my thread.

The nitrifying bacteria comes from the shrimp breaking down and causing ammonia. Then that gets broken down which causes nitrite. Then, once again, thats broken down to nitrates. The water from an established tank is gonna have little to no bacteria in it. ALL the bacteria is in the sand and rocks and on the glass!! Anerobic bacteria only survives in O2 free zones, which would be deep in the rock or in a deep sand bed. You can not jump start a cycle by using water!!!! Nothing happens fast in this hobby except for disaster. Oh btw, "live" sand is a waste of money cause any sand you put in will become "live" after time. Good luck

Thanks for the advice, any particular type of shrimp to place in the tank? Also, the main objective of the post is to avoid having to buy water, either RO/DI or premixed from the reef store. I understand nothing happens fast in this hobby, unfortunately I learned the hard way a few times with my previous tank. i'm planning on setting the system up now (with only rock and sand bed) and have it sit for atleast 1.5 to 2 months before I move to my new apartment in may, and then I'll start adding things slowly.

Still looking for water if anyone near Hauppauge NY (near Ronkonkoma and Smithtown on LI) is planning on doing a water change sometime soon. Thanks for looking.

Thank you very much for the offer but I am going to have to pass, i'm hoping people will be closer to me, in a 10 - 15 minute range. I only have the capacity to carry 15 gallons at a time and it would probably be about 1 - 1.5 hrs or more of driving to save approx $20 of water. Thank you again though.

Still looking for water near Hauppauge, NY. Thanks for looking.

The shrimp he mentioned is a dead shrimp from the fish market. So the cheapest one you can get is good enough. In fact, you can use fish food to do the same.
