Geez Louise! In others words 200 million isn't enough??? You want to ADD to the payroll AND on top of that pay more salaries for guys who aren't even on the team anymore. Get over it. It isn't the end of the world if your team doesn't reach the WS every year, let alone ::gasp:: fail to make the playoffs. At what point does it stop being fun, when your team is outspending everyone else ten-fold? Would you still enjoy it? I imagine it would get tiresome real fast. I'm surprised that it already hasn't for many Yankee fans. What made the Yankees so great (and fun to watch...well not for me but for Yankees fans) was their combination of a few star players combined with a handful of home-grown studs and some gutsy veterans and key role-players. They've gone away from that while they've gone overboard with the $$$$. The expression "the bigger they are the harder they fall" is very appropro with this team.

There are two problems with that. For one, Wong had already thrown more innings in one season than ever before by a longshot and he had been showing signs of a tired arm in September. Second, even if you win then what, are you going to ask Mussina to come back and pitch on three days rest also? Not gonna happen. I'm not a Yankee fan by any stretch of the imagination but I do think that Torre had no choice here, plus, let's be honest, who really thought that the Yankees would get shut down by Kenny Rogers? Sure, the guy had a decent season but the Yankee hitters have owned him AND he had an awful post-season rep. coming in.
