Just found this and thought I would share it since this seems to be a hot topic among reefers as far as what causes it. The findings seem solid and are cause to really take a look at how you administer carbon. I've never personally had any issues with lateral line disease but I have seen tanks where you couldn't even figure out what species some of the fish were the deterioration was so bad.
 
I don't think carbon is the only thing that can cause this but I think it plays a big role in it.
