out of curiousity, i would also like to know how many of you actually has raise them from small to over 1' because i hardly see any of them rasied to size that big in private homes.

probably because most people do not have tanks big enough for them to get that large.

Michael Marrone has some large tangs he has grown in one of his 260's.
And Michael Stern has a couple of home grown large tangs in his 450.

maybe you need to be named Mike to grow large tangs? :)

tank size is a big part of it but water quality plays more of a role than you would think. Nitrate, ammonia, and nitrite are poisons and can stunt the growth of a fish even is small amounts if they are constantly present. Diet also plays a role.

Besides all of the the above reasons, I guess a lot of them die before it reaches that size.

I cannot say for sure about Naso tang in particular but in FW world, growth of babies are particularly subject to water quality and diet. Then when the babies become big fish, the flow and the size(the height in particular thus water pressure) of the tank become very important for maximum size. For example, a lot of the times you will see fish that has become stable at a certian size in a smaller tank suddenly grow larger once they are moved to a bigger tank despite both tanks are basically having similar good water quality and same diet. Lets think of it like this: the height, size and flow are caps of the maximum size for the fish while water quality and diet are for speed of growth. Note that most animals are just like us who have growth periods and if nutrients and are ill timed, growth will be stunted no matter how big the tank is.
