Has anyone reached the "best if used by date" and continued to use it??
How do you know if its "dead"?? I have an almost full bottle that says not to use after Dec 1, 2005 I smell it and it doesnt smell rotten. Need advice on hoe to prolong it if I can. I hate wasting money on a big bottle without ever being to use it all.

when my bottle of DT's died all the good stuff settled to the bottom of the bottle. If the liquid in the bottle is still green and there's no sediment at the bottom it's still good.

If it dies throw it out. if you put it in your tank you'll only be adding bad nutrients.

DT's should be shaken on a regular basis. Just like Phytofeast. Settling on the bottom is not an indication that it has died. It can still be alive. However, the longer it sits out of suspension (on the bottom) the shorter the shelf life will be. Same thing goes for refrigeration. If you were to let it sit out for just one week, it would have zero nutritional value.

Pods love it, and it does trigger feeding responses in fish and coral. The feeding instructions should be tossed out the window IMO. TINY amounts only once or twice a week is plenty. 1/2 the dose they recommend.

I am Dennis Tagrin the owner of DT's Plankton Farm. If you have just purchased a bottle of DT's Live Marine Phytoplankton with a Best if Used by Date of December 1,2005 I would return it. We are at this time shipping product with a Best If Used By Date of July 15, 2006. If a bottle as old as what you claim does not smell , I would suspect that someone is refilling bottles with who knows what.

I bought it off the online store, marinedepot.com mid november 2005. i dont know why it doesnt smell yet. I do shake it everyday to keep everything in suspension. I guess i got the "bottom of the box stock"

BTW Great product!!!

remembering the days when i got my first FO tank, my fish died. i think it didnt help that i had 2 yellow tangs, a hippo tang and 2 percs in a 29 gal while running only a whisper power filter!! :smash: :skull:

Knowledge is POWER!!! Do your research and dont trust MOST of your LFS advice.

DT Phytoplankton

I bought the 'souped' up version of Phytoplankton from the LFS. It is dark green in color. When I opened the bottle, WHEW!! The H2S smell!!

Apparently it is ok to dose this? I am having difficulty understanding how something fairly foul smelling can be good...:)

Mario, you don't want to 'dose' it. It is a food source. Feed very very sparingly. Shake often.....daily or every other day. And don't use after the expiration date or if the smell gets worse than it is now. That means all the live cultures in it are dying.
