I don't know about you but lately I have been seen more tank breakdowns and reefers leaving this hobby than usual is it due to the terrible economy or just lackin the passion for this beautiful hobby. I personally have kept my nano's runnin with the upgrade in the back of my mind but due to lack of work I stick to what I know I can handle. Atleast for now I can still manage my hobby and not feel the financial burden. I hope to see acouple of you reefers that I know taking breaks come back.

After the last argument with my girl about money we went over everything and we realized if we didn't have the tanks, we could have a down payment on a house. Now I'm really considering shutting down :(

Yeah, I'm getting tired of dumping money into this hobby and not having the beautiful tank that others have. Its not anyone's fault but mine. Just don't have the time to put into it with two kids and all. Its going to get worst when they start school and I have to help them with school work. I'm thinking of shutting down and building a home theater in my basement.

:wink1: Im amazed you spent anywhere over 20k on your tanks, or your calculating wrong or not everything, or you have access to very cheap houses. Even a cheap 230k house is going to run you 23k for a down if you get the 10% down first time homeowners deal. + closing fee's and mortgage payments for a month and the crazy taxes. And if you do find that 230k house its gonna need some work so you need $$ for that too.

I wouldn't look at it that way unless you really spent the 20k on your fishtanks. Water and electrical costs and stocking and equipment a fishtank should run you about 6-10k max over 5 years on 200g of water. As nice as that 10k would have been its pennies compared to the costs that go into buying a home unless its brand new. Don't beat yourself up over it.

I could see people dumpin an easy 10k with no problem in a very little time frame with this hobby I for one have 2 nanos and they are packed so I had to borrow other people's tanks for holdin livestock which brings me to my upgrade which between money spent on nanos livestock equipment upgrade and maintenance I would say I'm in this hobby a cool 10k easy and one really dosent feel it because you will spend 600 this month or get into a groupbuy here or jump on a deal there but it does add up. So I could imagine the kind of money being dumped into some of these bigger tanks. I knew comin into this hobby that I would need money especially since I like all the highend corals that's what's killin me. With that said I hope a lot of these reefers do end up comin back I guess that's why I'm still runnin my nano's since they aren't that much time consumeing and work well with my financial situation for now

this is just as expensive as any hobby.it is what YOU make it.it can be as cheap as just paying the electric and water bills a month or you can go buy the new HIP equipment every couple of months and newer better salts 500 dolarr chalices or you can be like me and buy the right equipent to make your tank work buy 10 dollars frags and watch them grow .i never saw the point on buying a 100 dollar frag just because its a cool color or a hard to find zoa.i personally will never buy a frag more then 40 bucks.and that will be the only frag i buy for a month

I spent about 10k to on the tank and equipment then my girl went got but buy the color bug and bought every frag she wanted then the tank crashed lost almost every coral. Last year spent another 10 on my 55 when was living at my moms and kinda living wit my girl. while I was their she would spend stocking her tank to the t . So I would say 2 years about 20 to 30k. It's just crazy

We are not sure where his girl friend wants the house at. In Florida, many houses are only ~$35,000! My friend bought one with big axx swimming pool for $95,000.

Even though the data is true I am just messing around here, Tony.

Don't quit!!! You know that chances are even if you quit (temporarily) you're prob gonna end up getting back into it later...and spending all that money again! What I'm personally trying to do is add 50% to the cost of something I want for one of my tanks and put that into savings. For example, you want a $40 frag so look at it as if it's a $60 frag but $20 is going straight to your savings account. I think it's a good way to control impulse buys and add a good chunk o' change to your savings.

One can make this hobby expensive or inexpensive the choice is yours weather you like those expensive chalices or exotic acans and zoas or just stick to 10 dollar frags that's the beauty of this hobby one always has that choice and ofcoarse there is always the trade game
