Also, just something to consider: very few of the species we keep in captivity, including snails, are usually found in highly variable tide pools or intertidally. Even in most tide pools it's usually temperature that tends to be most variable, and salinity usually much less so. Some tidepools do indeed experience large salinity fluctuations on a regular basis, but again, the species that live in these places are generally not kept in captivity.

Think about it this way, they can make FRESHWATER fish like mollies survive in a sw tank because of a long acclimation process. They are normally in a 6.5 ph in freshwater. Acclimation is the key to survival.

But dont they have extremely shortened life spans due to kidney failure?

Mollies are brackish water fish that's why they can go either way, just like Monos and a few other species in the trade. I know of people who keep mollies in breeding tanks as part of their salt systems so they can use them as live food.
