Well i finally got around to checking my return pump. I had to cut a union in so i figured this was the perfect time to clean it up and inspect it. Well to my surprise i find rust on all the screws. This is on a mag18. Btw, the same screws that shaun gives out for the smaller pumps work on this one too. . I cleaned off the rust with a rough brush and i dremmeled out the rust on the inside of the cover. Hopefully this was the reason why my tank just can't seem to get on track.

So for those that still have the metal screws, i highly suggest to swap them out quick. Take a look!

Oh and to top it off, i took the time to treat with interceptor only to find out at the end of treatment that i had left a polyfilter in, i don't know how i missed it! :Yikes: . I take this as a mild treatment, i'll treat again next week. What a day!

How old is your pump ?
How long did you go without cleaning?
Just to give us a view on how long it take for it to get that way.

WOW, either you haven't cleaned that pump in like forever or your water quality is the pits. My screws get a little bit of rust color to them, but the inside NEVER looks like that. I'm thinking you need to do maintenance on your pumps more frequently...........HOWEVER, that shouldn't happen either way.

BTW, I'm using 7 Mag Drives all at once right now.

You know, I had the same problem with my ETSS skimmer. The gate valve has a stainless steel screw. I asked the manufacturer if it was okay if it was submerged. He said it was fine. That thing rusted and banged up my tank in 3 weeks. You got that right house, we rely on it and it bites us in the a$$.

Has anyone ever complained to the companies directly about it? I would call customer service and tell them that they are the cause for the tank crashing. I would also tell them that I was going to tell everyone about this and advise people to buy other products. If they get a few hundred calls like this they may change their tune.

Master,

I don't know what cleaning the pump has to do with rusting screws. You mean to tell me that if i clean them often, they will not rust? Maybe i'm clueless.

I do admit that i don't service the pump as frequently as i should. What you see is the typical deposits that forms on all pipes, pumps, etc. My water seems to be within proper parameters. CA at 430, ALK at 9.0, MAG 1300, Phosphate at 0 from what i could see. So i don't think my water is in the pits.

I plan on swapping it out for another pump anyways. I just have to find one that fits in the space.

This pump is probably about 1 year to 1 1/2 years old. If i remember right.

I already did a water change and tomorrow i will put a polyfilter in.

Ill try to find that thread for you.they said they once used nylon screws but they would break ,so they changed it to these AKA stainless steal that dont AKA rust!!

I guess the next ? is how many of the guys who replaced the stainless steel screws with nylon have had them break? One guy in the site was thinking of buying titanim screws instead... that would make the screws worth more than the pump. I'm no metal guy, but I'm pretty sure titanium rusts too.

It's really frustrating that they continue to sell them as is. It's such a manufacturing defect! It's also a shame because they are so reliable.
