Another reminder to watch your Mag pumps!

I don't know what cleaning the pump has to do with rusting screws. You mean to tell me that if i clean them often, they will not rust? Maybe i'm clueless.

I do admit that i don't service the pump as frequently as i should. What you see is the typical deposits that forms on all pipes, pumps, etc.

Pedro, what's fouling your water is the rust/deposits that are accumulating inside the pump. If you clean those deposits off then they won't have as much of an opportunity to crash your system. The fact that the screws rust basically sucks. Believe me, if I have to replace all my pumps, I'm gonna have to mortgage my damn house. So I do spend a bit more time servicing them to assure that none of that crap gets into my system (or as little as possible).

And as far as saying your water must have a lot of crap in it, I didn't mean that as if you weren't performing system husbandry. Don't read it that way, please. (Online comments can sometimes be misconstrued). What I meant was your source water can be very different from the guy down the street. Some have hard water, some have soft water (although in the Northeast we almost all have hard water) but there are different solids in different areas. Are you using RO/DI water?

Anyway, I hope Danner does right by you. They are probably the largest submersible pump vendor in the US. If there were some way to hit them in the bottomline, maybe then they'd change their tune.

Just wanted to add my input. I was using the mags before, I switched over. Their were just too many cons in using the pump. Here they are:
1. Rust Issue
2. Heat transfer is high
3. Power Consumption
4. They run al little loud.

I switched over to the quiet ones, and I have been very happy with them. They are extremely quiet (duh), the 3000 (780 gph) model only uses 40 watts and puts out more then the mag 7 (700gph). The quiet ones also run very cool too.

i dont no about the heat issues with the mag... i have my tank temp set at 79 with the heater and it hasent moved.. i have the mag 9.5

this is just what ive seen so far using the mag 9.5

i changed the screws to nylon - no rust problem
power consumption - yea its alot but i dont pay the electric bill
heat problem - none that i no of
noise - cant hear it at all...

I personally like the quiet ones much more, and I have used the mags for quite some time.

The say, the screws do not rust and if there is proof to this to bring it to them. She put me on hold to verify this issue.

another thing was the noise, she walked me thru a procedure to check if the impeller was good or bad. according to the test it show my impeller being bad.
Causing all the noise and poor performance.:skull:

The pump is not in any system right now, but I will get a new impeller to check her claim. I'm also willing to let it sit submerged for a while to check the screws.

Doesn't anyone know how to check for rust chemically? :scratchch
A visual just won't do.

Also,does anyone know who carries spare impellers for a 9.5A?

an iron test kit?
test a clean container of ro water, the put the rusty pump in it, and test it again. if it shows iron then there is rust, right?

Thanks for clarifying that. I almost misunderstood your statement. Glad it's set straight.

Now that i have the union, i am able to service the pump more frequently. I do feel better that those screws are out of the system.

I always use RO/DI and check with my tds meter to make sure it's working properly.

I sent them an email with pictures, so we will see what they have to say!

Pedro, sorry to hear about your mag. Solbby and I had this problem a while back. Good new is the very next day I took the mag out, things began to look better.

No problem. My aim in all my posts is to be as helpful and informative as possible. Talking online is difficult sometimes, there's no way to read peoples vocal inflection, body language, tone of voice, etc. Too easy to miscommunicate. Anyway, water under the bridge.

Glad you're getting through to Danner. I hope it all works out for you and all of us really.

Rich, did you replace your Mag's with another brand? Still using the Mags with nylon screws? Fill me in. Like I said, I'm running SEVEN Mags. Hate to replace them, but I will if it means fixing the problem before it's a problem.

Russ, I replaced the mag with an eheim.

How are you using 7 mags for your tank? Is it possible to run a pump like a sequence dart and branch it off to save some electricity?

Rich, In my sump I've got:
~ Mag 9.5 for my skimmer
~ Mag 9.5 for my return
~ Mag 2 to my fuge
~ Mag 9.5 to my MRC fluidized media chamber

In my RO/DI autotopoff I've got a Mag 7

In my saltwater makeup water I've got a Mag 3

In my RO/DI topoff for my 16g nano I've got a Mag 3

All in all five Mags are running within my display tank (one of them is in freshwater though). Another one is remotely connected by way of the SW makeup water tub. So that's six total on my big tank.

The 7th one is in FW also for my nano.

Any way you slice it, I'm running 7 Mags.

Russ, off the 3 mag 9's + mag 2 and get a sequence dart. It can do the job of all these pumps, with some new plumbing, for 160watts!
I know its alot of work to replumb and get new equipment though

Rich, that sounds great, in theory. But my head pressure is a lot. My return is on the floor with approx. 9' head. My MRC FMC is on the floor too, with the same 9' head. That's 18' of head pressure without the fuge line or the skimmer.

I would love nothing better than to run my tank with less heat issues, and using less electric. Especially since the damn utiliities have decided to force everyone to remortgage their homes just to pay for electric recently.

Any other pump suggestion is VERY welcome. Replumbing would be a pain, but not as much a pain as having to clean 7 mags every few months!

Yikes! thats a lot of head I will put some more thought into this tomorrow to see if I can come up with an alternative to the mags that will make it worth while.
