yup it's all about what you can afford..50 grand is like 50 cents to a guy like bill gates or donald trump because they're biillionaires. They don't care about money, prices are virtually irrelevant. They have so much they don't know what to do with it so they buy ridiculous things like expensive champagne, buildings, cars, super computers, super models LOL etc. Look at things like johnny blue, cristal, dom p etc etc. There is bottles of wine and champagne that are thousands of dollars and you drink that with a meal or something. Hey let's drink 5 grand! LOL All crazy priced but people buy it. Part of it is the "cause I can" factor. I think it's safe to say that if anyone of us was a billionaire or even multi millionaire we would get crazy too. I am pretty sure if any of us hit lotto we would go and buy that lambo, ferrari etc we always wanted. I know I sure as hell would. I would go for around an 87 countache and a newer aston martin.

I think the power is with the buyers as suppliers of corals are not monopolized. What that means is corals are luxury, you do not have to buy them at a price you are not willing to pay. It's not a service or products that we rely on to survive, unlike gas, electricity, communication, transits, medical attentions, housing... So when there is no one willing to pay for the high prices, the seller will drop the prices. Look at the T5 and Mh WTB and FS forums in MR, any of those hardware asking for more than 50% of their corresponding new prices will never get sold. Buyers have the power because those lights are in abundance and not a must to have. So seller drop prices sooner or later or simply give up and let them rust. Same with coral, if you don't post their existence and in fact promoting them, the seller will drop their prices to attract you.

MR is made up of all walks of life, with that said and expected -- all sizes of W2s. Buy what is within your means, and enjoy the great hobby.

hmmm.... i didn't know the louboutin's come in your size.....they must make your calves and butts look phenomenal.....hahaha

LOL You are one crazy guy, Tom. Cmon, let's find us a Ferrari forum and gripe about affordability there. :Starwars:

Is it me, or do you agree that the prices of corals and frags are just getting out of hand. Not to mention their website, but i saw a j.fox frag selling for $1150.00 for 2 eyes.. On another website, a scoly selling for $600.00

i think i maybe leaving this hobby - equipment and livestock to be listed soon.[/QUOTE

While I along with many of you would never buy a $1150 coral, that doesn't mean we should all pack up and leave the hobby because someone else has a different value on it than us.

Do you give up your car because because someone sells $500,000 sports cars? Of course not. When people offer things up at huge prices rest assured that in our capitalistic society the "true value" will be realized when the buyer and seller agree on a price. Maybe its $1150 for two eyes or maybe in the end the guy takes $100 but either way don't let someone drive you out of a hobby you love :)

It's like the "breeding gone wrong", mutant clownfish craze. Have you seen the prices on them? I personally wouldn't put one of them in my tank if it was free!! But hey, that's just my opinion. Some people apparently can't pay enough for them.

The real funny thing about the "breeding gone wrong" clowns is if you go to PetCo you'll see all the Clowns that are dump onto PetCo because they don't meet the "standard", who in turn sells them for a fraction of the prices of what they go for on-line. Now I'm sure PetCo makes a deal on them, and in the end captive breeding is a good thing and selling them to PetCo helps the program to keep going, but I guess in the end it is a business and people are willing to pay more for things that go wrong.

I actually feel like a lot if corals are a lot cheaper now.. I mean, yes scolys are $ and so are some other things.. But if you buy an sps pack and Lps pack from the right people it's all good,, once in a while I'll buy something crazy.. Yo each their own man....
U have a friend w every damn pair of nikes, no joke.. I'm talking 200$ pairs and hundreds of them..... I made fun of him and said I only have two pairs..
Then he said, well,,,,, u spend money on corals, modding cars, etc..... So whatever!

I don't have any of those clowns in my tank (although I am raising some separately), and the only thing I can add here is that fish breeding and hybridization is actually a somewhat incredible thing. You should consider it along the lines of a dog or cat show. Those breeds have been established over thousands of years, we're only about 20 years into captive breeding. While some of them do look like "mutants", the long term goal is to separate distinct characteristics that are appealing to fish owners. I think it is actually a pretty interesting hobby by itself.

I also have to agree there..prices on some of these clowns are INSANE most of them either look like every other clown or are just ugly. I'd take a nice looking wrasse or anthias over some disgustingly overpriced clown any day of the year. I do agree with Josh though speaking as a former fish breeder it's a pretty cool thing. I bred tons of cichlids for years and I have gotten some really cool patterns and color variations. I sold them all cheap though I didn't try to rape anybody like a lot of other breeders do. I sold lots to pet land stores as well who also sold them at affordable prices. I knew the managers so we were on the same page. I was breeding variations of jelly bean parrots, flowerhorn morphs, african cichlids , severums, convicts etc. I liked the jellybean parrots because they were mixed w/ pink convict which made them stay small. Lots of the people who buy fish especially from a place like petland end up buying monsters like oscars, pacos and regular parrots because of their cheap price tags but end up putting them in a small tank or a 55 at max when they get 12"+ then want to dump them back at the store. The jelly beans were able to stay in a small tank with no problem because they only got a few inches and that is just a good thing in general.

I don't understand the reasoning behind this post. There are cars out there worth millions of dollars but that doesn't stop anyone from buying the far less expensive options for their daily commute... By your reasoning, expensive cars would cause you to sell off your car.... I don't get it.

It's not about pricing. You will always have people who gravitate to the far more expensive frags just because they want to be able to tell people they bought the frag for some ridiculous amount of money, but that doesn't make the frag actually worth that much. It also doesn't devalue any other frag just because it's priced that high. One of the biggest misconceptions in this hobby is that corals and fish have to be expensive to look nice and that is the farthest thing from reality. There are far nicer and healthier tanks that look amazing and didn't cost that much while some of the tanks filled with tiny expensive frags look like crap because the person caring for it doesn't know what they are doing. Even common corals can look incredible when cared for by the right person. It isn't the coral that makes the tank as much as it's the person responsible for the tank that makes it awesome.

Well said
