i kinda figured that but i just had to ask the only critters i got so far was a baby clam,a small mollusk,and a shrimp who has buried himself in the sand right under the rock i know he aint mantis but yet i couldnt get a id but he seemed real harmless.

Welcome, for your nitrate problem, you should consider getting rid of the fluval. that might be the cause of it as canisters are known to become nitrate factories. you can make your 10 gal into a sump after the rocks are cured. have fun!

Cannister and HOB filters only become a nitrate factory when you don't clean them often. I have both and clean them every 2 weeks each and I have no problems. 2nd week of the month I clean my cannister filter 4th week the HOB Penguin 330 gets cleaned. Untill I figure out how I am going to turn the P330 into a fuge I am still using the biowheels too.

So all in all if you;re up on your maintenance with the filters you won't have any problems.
