IMHO it is a rip-off and over priced and does not do all it claims, as it can't

1. The GAC is just an avg grade Bitum GAC
2. The GFO is fine, most are more or less the same
3. Ion exchange resins DO NOT work in seawater. ( Ask your the question, would you use a DI resin in seawater, as that is all it is. There is not a ion exchange resin on this planet that can do as claimed in seawater. The SeaChem labs resin, Purigen, is NOT an ion exchange resin but a OSR ( Organic Scavenger Resin) and works fine.

You can make your own better and cheaper and much more efficient by buying some Purigen, a good GAC and GFO.

Boomer, great point on the ion exchange resins, kind of funny actually now that you point it out.

I was sold on the "elite" ferric oxide to minimize phosphate load. I dont know if any experiments were done to prove this binding. Would be nice to see ferric oxide treated salt water samples ran under Ion Chromatography for phosphate content..

Nothing done on ICP but lab grade spectro's have been used.

#1 HC GFO (High Capacity)
2 RowaPhos
3. others

Almost all GFO in this hobby is Bayoxide E-33, E-33P or E33-HC from Severntrent (E-33 and E-33P) or Lanxess (E-33HC). ROWA is from Siemens and is their GFH ( formerly called AsorbAS in lab studies for Arsenic removal, which is what GFO was original called when developed for 3rd World countries at the Technical University of Berlin, Germany, Department of Water Quality Control, with Harbauer GmbH of Germany)

i have a 14 gallon biocube and I used to run the chemi pure elite my corals never grew. I went to a aquarium adventure for snails and spoke to a sales person and he said i am better off running just purigen and so i did and my tank has grown tremendously. he said the chemi pure elite strips lots of nutrients / trace elements

thats my take even tho boomer really broke it down in some terms that seems greek to me

Is it true you can recharge Purigen with bleach? Ive read this before and not sure if it actually works. Sorry for the jack thread but I run 2 small bags of Purigen and a a bag of Pura complete plus a Phos reactor with Phosban. I have to replace all 3 and Im kinda short on funds atm. Im wondering what I should do?

Henry

Yes, SeaChemLabs is fine to use.

Fish

Yes, that is correct on the bleach

Others;

The purpose behind GAC and GFO is to remove PO4, dissolved organics and keep the DOC's low. The so called stripping of TE is a myth. However, what can happen if one uses to much GAC and/or GFO or even CPE or if one never used these and then started to use them, is it can strip the tank of nutrients to fast which stresses corals. So, one needs to lower the amount of GAC used. If on has been using GAC on a regular bases, it is ~ 1/2 cup / 50 gal. If you have not used it before, then cut that 1/2 half cup in half or use 1/3 of that 1/2 cup and increase it slowly to that 1/2 cup. If you change GAC from a poor grade to a high grade, cut that 1/2 cup in half or use 2/3 of that 1/2 cup and slowly bring it up to 1/2 cup/ 50 gal. If you are using ROX, it is NOT 1/2 cup / 50 gal but 1/3 cup / 50 gal.
